It's not working, but the boards and monitor is very clean. What all needs to be done to these monitors to make them reliable. F100 and F101 are blown so I guess I will start checking for shorted components.
Thanks, Scott

actually a great price for anything with a K6100 even non-working. just the tube if good could go for well over $150. but hopefully you'll repair it and get it up and running instead of parting it out.

the K6100's benefit from a lot of parts upgrades, especially in the low voltage section (the "LV 2000" or similar.) Bob sells [when open] a couple of levels of kits that take care of a lot of the other replacement and upgrade components; i'm not sure who else does similar but i'm sure someone must. it's not hard to put $50+ and a couple of hours into replacing a lot of parts but once done it's pretty solid. i got mine already rebuilt with a few years on it and it's been great, even after nearly a year on location now.

Great pick up!

If I were you I would shot gun the monitor with all available fixes and keep that kick ass game!

And get the Tempest Tubes mod.

It will look great next to Asteroids...

:D

Thanks Guys,
I am definitely going to repair and add it to the collection. I think it will clean up nicely. I haven't rebuilt a Vector before, but what I have been reading a rebuild kit and low voltage modification board will make them solid.
Which low voltage mod should I order? LV2000 or LV2000 Light or some other type?

Thanks for the link hailrazer.

What a steal!! :)
Take your time fixing her up. Might have both monitor and logic board issues. >> Many threads here about debuggin' and fixin' both.

Tempest Update

I found one frame mounted transistor shorted so far on the monitor.
Voltage was 5.2 volts at the harness.
The board LED came on and when you put a coin in no sound, but the start buttons light up. Two coins both lights. Hit the start button no sound. A little checking and a speaker wire was chewed into.
Good news we are playing blind and back to the monitor.
With a little cleaning it's looking really good.

Thanks, I was really happy to pick it up for that price.
Do I need to buy the LV2000 or the LV2000 Light?
Maybe a different one all together.

Lv2000

Either one should work fine.

They are a bit of work to put in, but if you can re-cap a monitor then its worth doing this at the same time. There are good instructions on the site.

Very nice find! Tempest is a great game.

The lite is the non-adjustable version, you only save a few bucks. Should be essential to bulletproofing a 6100.

Ok, this is my first tempest repair. I installed a master kit with a LV2000 light and went over the boards really good. Hooked it up and hit the power and F700 blew immediately. I shut it off right away. Found Q703 shorted.
I hadn't seen the board test paragraph before powering up
I checked the pcb outputs at the orange wire is at 1.0 volts to 5.0 volts. What should I check after I replace the shorted transistor?
Thanks

It's possible that you have a game board problem, and the board is putting out bad voltages to the monitor, which is causing the fuses (and possibly other stuff) to blow. In general, you never want to connect a 6100 to a game board unless you are sure the game board is putting out safe voltages, as you'll just repeatedly blow the monitor.

Test the DC and AC voltages on the XOUT and YOUT test points on the game board. You should have between 0 and 1 volt DC, and roughly 2-3V AC on each. These are not exact values, as they fluctuate a bit during the attract mode. But if you are getting more than 1.5V DC on either, there is a problem.

If that's the case, one quick check is to feel the chips in the video section with the back of your finger, with the game powered on, and the monitor disconnected. The video section is the lower right section, where the adjustment pots are. If any chips are scorching hot, they are bad, particularly the TL081's, TL082's or 1495's. You want to replace those first, and socket them.

That won't be guaranteed to fix it, as chips can be bad and not get hot, but if they're hot they're definitely bad, so start there.

I have been out of town and just getting back to the Tempest.
I tested the outputs on the board X is running low as to be expected.
Test point Y is testing at 1 - 4.9 volts. None of the chips seem to be hot.
Just mildly warm.
What should I test next?
I appreciate your time and assistance,
Scott
