I picked up an Asteroids Deluxe really cheap off Craigslist a couple days ago . I've played Asteroids back in the day but never Deluxe . I've ordered the bulbs and they come tomorrow , so I can play AD in its full glory . Its my first vector game . The serial number is scratched off but theres a stamp on the inside that says Mar 12 1981 .

Its pretty decent except for the side art . Do they make repro side art ?

Also the monitor has a few issues . Theres a dot in the middle of the screen and each object on screen has a faint line that comes out and stretches across the screen . The lines don't show up in the picture but the dot in the middle does .

You should be able to get rid of that dot by turning down the brightness/screen. Not positive with that monitor, but there should be a brightness pot on the chassis and a screen knob on the flyback. My Gravitar had a dot in the center too before I adjusted it.

Great game. It's on my list!

Hey thanks , I'll check it out . I'm not familiar with these monitor . Hopefully adjusting gets rid of the lines I'm also seeing .

You're actually viewing the image via a half-silvered mirror and there is a blue gel overlay on the monitor itself.

I've found the combination of those parts to be usually pretty filthy. You can remove the metal mirror retainer and slide it out for cleaning, it's going to be really dirty if it hasn't been done before. While you've got it opened up, clean the backdrop with a Swiffer Duster, (use the hand held one) and pull the blue gel and clean it along with the picture tube.

Mean Green will cut right through the cigarette tar build up, and Windex will take care of the streaking from the Mean Green.

If you want to go one better, pull the deflection board from the monitor and reflow fresh solder on every header pin, the HV assembly could probably use the same treatment.

Final tip: use the "blue" blacklights instead of the "white" ones. The whites ones are originally specified, but most collectors find them to be too bright, showing too much of the black background instead of just the flourcesent highlights.

Once you've got everything cleaned and reflowed, set the brightness and contrast and those retrace lines should disappear.

Mamemarques.com was reproducing sideart for Asteroids Deluxe. But I was just checking and I don't see it anymore. I remeber it was $189. I guess they got a ceast and descist from atari.

Also, really, really nice machine.

Pull the deflection board out and reflow the solder on all the connectors, and the two large
resistors.

I still got a Asteroids Deluxe cab avaiable, working, not as good as this one. $270.

It's there man:

It's just mis-spelt all to shit so it does not show up in a normal search...

I believe Rikitiki has mentioned something in the past about reproing ASD sideart if he could get his hand on the original gels or whatever he uses to do that...

AWESOME !!!! I didn't think there was repro sideart !!

Mike Doyle and SuperBee4406 , thanks for the advice with the monitor , I'm gonna do all that you guys suggested . I ordered the "white" black light , but I'll pick up the "blue" one as well and compare to see what looks best . I've been reading theres mixed opinions on what to use .

dek , I got it for $100 from this older lady who got her house foreclosed and was selling everything she had and wanted everything gone by 5:00pm that day . She also had a MsPac for $200 , but was holding it for some guy from Modesto . The MsPac was a little beat up , no back door .

Speaking from expience, I have tried the dark blacklight and the white blacklight, and I would say the white one looks so much better.

Ha ! Yep it seems to be 50-50 , some like the dark and some like the white ,

I have the white coming tomorrow , but I wanna try both and see the differences between the two .

Wal-Mart sells the dark black light (BLB) I think is the designation, so it's easy enough to find one. I think the personal preference on which light to use is going to come down to whether the game is located in a fairly dark room, or a normaly lit one.

Good score, I'm surprised she was asking $200 in a desperation sell off like that for the Ms Pac?

Before you start comparing bulbs, I would clean up the viewing
area. Clean both sides of the mirror. And remeber to put a piece
of tape on the front of the mirror, so you don't put it in backwards.
Clean the monitor and blue filter. Then you can start comparing
bulbs. This is what makes Asteroids Deluxe a cool game, the right
light and the mirror.

Cool ! I have a Wal-Mart 5 minutes from my house .

Haha , I know , everyone and their mom has played or likes MsPacman so even in desperate times they'll want more money for one .

Yeah I'll get it all setup and cleaned then compare the bulbs . I'm excited to get it going cause I've only played asteroids and never AD with the lights and EVERYONE has said how cool this game is all setup , can't wait , wheres the damn mail man !!!!
