Picked up a HUO Sega Star Trek with a neat story...

First the story behind the HUO... Back in 1983 on Thanksgiving morning a girl opened up a box of cereal and inside was a winning ticket for a Sega Star Trek arcade game... that is it... end of story. :D

Luckily the game stayed with the family through the years being moved from state to state as the family moved, finally ending up at the parent's summer home up in Essex, NY.

The parents were grateful to have the game go to a good home and the mother lit up when she told the story of that Thanksgiving morning. I almost slapped myself when I heard "Are you sure you want to sell it? It's just such a great story I don't think I'd ever be able to let the game go?" come out of my mouth. She and her husband laughed and said they were sure. Funny thing is she even took a picture of me next to the game getting ready to load it on the truck and then instantly sent it off to "the kids". Very nice peoples.

Now, if you look at the pictures the first thing you'll notice is the monitor is not in the game. I ended up removing it once we got the game to my truck because the father saw it was loose inside the game. "Uh-oh" instantly came to mind. Looking inside the bezel you could see the plywood was all splintered.

I got asking about what could have possibly happened to cause this and they said the game stopped working after the last move. I told them the only way to break plywood like that was dropping the game. So then we got looking around the game and there is a crack on the left side of the game also. Definitely dropped. :(

Honestly, it would have been nice to have an absolutely perfect HUO game but this thing is nicer than any game I've ever owned... even with the crack on the left side. The artwork has a couple scratches but damn it's got such brilliant colors... it's beautiful. You can tell it wasn't ever in the sun. The control panel is perfect and the spinner feels brand new. Two of the three locks still have the "Quality Assurance" stickers on them and according to the previous owners keys never even came with the game. They did take the game to get repaired once so I'm assuming the repair guy tried keys until he got lucky(bastard broke through the stickers!). :)

Didn't have time at all this weekend to look at the game but I'm planning to open her up tonight and make sure everything is connected as it should be. I'm also going to cut a new monitor mounting plate to put the monitor back in.

I'm keeping my finger's crossed but I definitely won't be holding my breath. :D

Damn... still can't believe I got this!

I wonder what they had to pay in taxes on their arcade game when they won it back in the day? Sometimes the retail dollar amounts are so inflated that the taxes can be outrageous. That Mountain Dew arcade game setup comes to mind.

I remember that contest - it was for Quaker's "Halfsies" cereal, and the commercial made it look like if you won, you could choose Star Trek, Super Zaxxon, or Pengo.

The commercial is on YouTube. I'd post a link, but I'm at work, and YouTube is blocked here.

Kyle

...

thats super funny.

the STAR TREK i have is also HUO/won from a cereal box contest.

even says something like complements from Sega on the back.

Heh, that was one thing the parents specifically mentioned to me... they were shocked at the end of the year because they had to pay full taxes on the retail value!

That is awesome that you remember! I searched before I picked it up for anything having to do with a cereal contest back then but couldn't find it. As soon as I'm done here I'm going to go search YouTube! :) Thanks!

Now you made it so I have to go look for *anything* specially marked on it! :)

I'm psyched to drill out the coin box lock because it has NEVER been opened. I'm curious if Sega or the cereal company put anything special or cool in there.

The folks said that they didn't get the keys... or instructions... or anything specifically contest related when the game was delivered. Sounds like the shipping company just dropped it off and that was it. So who knows what is in "the box"?!?!

"Chances of winning 1 in 13,000"

That's not bad odds at all compared to many contests today.

Ended up getting the change box opened and found one of these in it...

and there was also a 1976 quarter in there. :)

No mention of the game being compliments of Sega for the contest but there are the remnants of a sticker on the back of the machine in the upper-left so I wonder if maybe it was there? Is that where yours was Jon? I doubt you can get to it but I'd love to see what the sticker looks like.

Oh, and btw... I paid $200 for the game(actually... if you factor in the 1976 quarter I only paid $199.75!!!). :D

That is funny. Steve(SRW) and I bought a couple games off a guy who had a Star Trek in his warehouse. When we inquired about buying it, he said no way because it was HUO and he had got it from a woman who won it in a contest. I can only assume it is the same contest. I wonder how many were given away?

Also makes you wonder why they had to give them away...

I wonder if it's too late for me to enter the contest as I'd like another one! :)

Those free play instructions are excellent because mine came rigged for free play but the operation is erratic. I'll have to go try those instructions out to see if it works for me but I blamed it on something being wrong with the game. Maybe there isn't anything wrong with it...

The coin switches and credit switch inside of the door are protected against 'fake' presses by some timing built into the software.

Giving them a quick flick as a coin would as it falls through registers a credit. Holding any of the switches down for more than a moment will not give a credit.

Kicks, rigs, shocks, strings, and such are all prevented from giving credits unless you get the timing right also.

Excellent info -- thank you! I had no idea...
