Grabbed a Gyruss on a whim today. It seems to be in relatively decent shape, but does need a bit of work. I don't know much about the cabinet itself, only that I love the game :) I do know it doesn't have the original Monroe stick in it, which I need to track down, and there's some other obvious things that you'll all be able to pick out in the pic below (painted sides, upside down bezel, that strip holding the marquee in place, burn in, etc).

It's still in the back of the truck so I haven't had a chance to check out the inside too much yet, other than a quick look when we loaded it. The inside looked complete and original based on the few pictures I looked up before I headed over to pick it up, but I'll need to get in there again to be sure. Well, except for the CFL I noticed up top before putting the door back on.

Anyway, those of you who have restored these (or who haven't :)), any gotchas to keep my eyes open for when I start digging into this thing would be appreciated. This will be the first time I've tried to strip the black paint off the side - here's hoping the original paint is still under there in decent shape. I can see some red and orange in places where the black has peeled off, so it might not be too bad in the end. I'm hoping it'll be good enough for just some touching up. There is some cabinet damage at the bottom, though.

I'll post more pics once I get it off the truck (probably tomorrow, just need some help).

Side art is stenciled so go easy with the stripper. Good luck in recovering it.

Your CPO looks like a nice original, just keep it. The repros don't look right.

Its easy to swap in a Time Pilot board for variety.

1st order of resto buisness should be tracking down the correct stick.

Having troubling adding more than one photo at at time. I will take it out of the control panel unless you happen to be interested in that. $50 plus shipping

Out of the house right now but I'll take a look when I get home and shoot you a PM. Thanks!

On my top 10 of all time. Love this game. I did a restoration thread I need to update. If you need any pics, let me know.
Pics would be awesome! I'll look for your thread :)

The bezel is upside down. Turn it 180 degrees so it's right-side up, the horizontal piece is the bottom. :)

Alright, finally got this thing in the house tonight. Fired it up and played a game - topped the score I set at Grinkers, lol. Not great, I'm sure, but I'll enjoy the battle while getting better

After a few games, I started to look things over. Here's a few shots (more are here).

CPO is decent - might look better after a good cleaning. There's some chipping and some rust, but I've heard the repros aren't very good, so unless that's changed, I'll probably leave it.

Burn in is pretty bad, but not noticeable while playing so I probably won't worry about it for now. I may have a spare tube, though, I'll need to check.

CFL, huh? Alright I guess. What was in here originally? The light in the back causes the light to shine through in places that I prefer it didn't...as you'll see in other pics, I imagine. The power switch seems to have been removed as well.

Is that a HAPP Super in there? Heh. It plays reasonably well for now, but I'll be happier when I can get the right stick in there.

So after I turned it off and before pulling it out to look in the back, I turned it on again and the game didn't fire up. Everything else did, though. While I had it out, I tested this a bit and it was sort of coming and going. I noticed the duct tape on the harness and figured that couldn't be good and likely had something to do with what I was seeing...removing the harness shows me all I need to know, I think...ugh. So what's the easiest way to fix something like that? I can think of a few ways I could work around the problem for now, but I might as well do the long term solution right off the bat, right?

I'm sure you realize this already, but your lower marquee bracket is not original. It really didn't even exist. That was a wooden piece with a channel routed in it and the marquee just sat it in and as well the glass and artwork for the bezel went into the opposite bottom portion of that.

In regards to your light fixture, the original was a fluorescent fixture with a power switch built into it. It was accessible through the hole in the top of the cab.

You're image looks to be cutoff on the right side. More thank likely the Vertical Size is adjusted too far and then just need to be centered. Also looks like maybe you have some jailbars going on with the monitor. Kinda tough though as I've noticed Gyruss and TimePilot can produce those if the image is not adjusted properly.

Yeah, I forgot to ask about it when I posted that pic in the last post. I'm curious as to how the original looked now and what I can do to try and fix it. From looking at it now, it's hard to tell what might have been there before. Is it maybe that the end broke off of mine where the channel was? Regardless, the metal strip there sure sticks out like sore thumb...

Thanks - that makes sense. I'll probably need to make due with something not original, but I imagine I can wire up something similar.

Yep - the picture has already been centered since I took that pic, though I still have some other adjustments to make. Fortunately, the jail bars are really only noticeable on the title screen. Or at least I didn't really pay them any mind while playing. But I still plan to get to that as well.

Far from a perfect cab to say the least, but I'm happy with it for now. It's still one of the better looking cabs I've picked up in the last few years :p

Thanks for all the feedback!

Maybe this will help a little, this is the best picture I have on my computer at the moment of what that marquee/bezel retainer looks like.

Thanks, I think I have an idea of what it may have looked like. I'll dig around through some of the restoration threads here too. I'll look at mine a little better this week - If I'm imagining it correctly, it looks like I may be able to get by with replacing that one board with something a bit wider, route the slots for the marquee and plexi, slap some t-molding on there, and call it a day :)

You're missing the cardboard blackout shroud. There are measurements in the forum somewhere, it fits around the monitor and over the speakers. Once that's in place and the bezel is in front of it (horizontal piece goes across the bottom to block the speakers) the light won't bleed around it.

There's no t-molding on it. It's just wood with a rounded edge.

Is that not what's in pic 4 above, or is there more to it that I'm missing? The pic makes it a bit hard to see, I suppose. The one in there is definitely beat up and torn in a few places, so I'll likely consider cutting a new one one day as the covers for the speakers are warped enough to not want to stay down. Though I managed to get them mostly in place and the bezel flipped after I put everything back together after taking these pics.

Ah. Even easier, I suppose :) Thanks for the heads up, sir.

While you're here, and I know this goes a long ways back at this point, but do you still have/make the high score save kits? If not, I just recently got a programmer, so I should be good once I get to that point.

Ah, yeah that's it - I see it now. If it's all there it should be easy to cut a new one from that.
