PHOENIXARCADE NEW art "contest" $500 and $300 store credit to the winner

I've been kicking around lots of designs for the ARCADESD multigame marquee for about a year now and still not happy with the results. Eventually I'm gonna offer a full kit but need to get this started.

So I am holding a contest thru September 16th 2012. Please design a marquee 23.125" x 9" to fit a std MsPac-Galaga-Pac cabinet. Maximum colors 9. Use original or clip art. Remember this is going to be screen printed so it needs to be Vectored in your final submission. The winning design I choose becomes my property (to not use it, print it, modify it...) and in return you will receive a $500 store credit good for 1 year.

Additionally a cpo design to fit a MsPac-Galaga-Pac panel to incorporate a trackball, buttons and stick. $300 store credit for 1 year. I hope that's enough for the price police.

You may post your design here for all to see and give feedback but make sure it's low rez so my inkjet friends don't copy it for their stores. But you will need to email me the design in order for me to consider it as part of the contest.

Show me what you got and good luck to all who participate.

Darin

That doesnt make much sense to pay for a design to print and a design that will never be put to use.

Doesn't make much sense for a lot of people to design something when only one person gets paid, additional rewards would help remedy that. Not much of a contest, really. Seems better just to ask people to submit previous work and then commission a specific artist.

God, everyone has their panties in a bunch today.

Submit if you agree, don't if you disagree.

Thats the beauty of crowd sourcing. There are entire sites devoted to this idea of accepting many submissions, but only one payout. Some people will go for it while others will think its stupid. Do it or dont. There is $800 worth of good up for grabs so its not like they are trying to lowball anyone.

Someone please find another contest where you get to design something arcade related and win $500. The days of the Toobin shirt contest and win a video game from a cereal box are long over...

I think this will be an interesting contest to watch. As I plan to build a multi/mini cabinet eventually, I might as well wait this out and see what the art looks like. I will probably buy it.

I can't design artwork well enough to win the $800 prize, so I want a free T-shirt for nothing.

You obviously don't follow my posts... I have no interest in anything Darin has to offer. I just dislike the idea that multiple people could waste their time when only one will get a "prize", which is only good for a limited selection of side art.. (remember, he doesn't do one-off customs) and why the one year limit on the credit? You would think someone who prints art would have a better appreciation for artists. I've made my point, and continue to think this will end poorly; if you want art, commission an artist, and pay them real money.

The only reason this thread exists is myself and a few others pointed out he wasn't offering enough to begin with... but I won't post in this topic anymore, and will put on my fireproof suit. Darin Jacobs Defense Force assemble!

Yeah, thisis like "Speck work" like 99Designs.com, Man I had no idea at all how many people are against this when I needed a logo. But I sure learned about it fast. The problem is the people that spend hours of work on the design and then not get picked or paid.

It works... I had logoworks.com (HP LogoWorks) do my logo design. No payment up front, but payment part way through and remainder when finished to get all the vector files.

I think things like branding/logo design can not be effectively done through spec work. Sure you can get logo and a business card, but it usually isnt very well thought out or tailored to each company or their audience.

This marquee, cpo thing is more of an art project in my eyes. Yes it takes a some skill and thought, but whether or not it is "good" is subjective, much like art. Branding can actually be measured for effectiveness.

Sorry for the rant.... :D I tend to go on tangents about design

Each time you post you lose IQ points. Stop before you're out since you didn't have much to begin with.

The time limit is fair and you know how long it is upfront. I'm continuously making new products with advance notice. If there isn't something one wants then they could always cash it in and resell it.

I did not commission an outside artist because like my Multi-Williams design, I had my ideas and someone inside the hobby drew it for me. Someone active in the hobby should have a better feel for an arcade related design. I do have a basic cpo design but didn't like it enough to print it and my marquee design missed the mark and I'm stuck.
