Finally got a chance to look at that Phoenix I talked about a few weeks back... I'm guessing it's the flyback that's broken on it, but one thing's got me a little puzzled.

First of all, the game is in A+ condition, inside-and-out. A little dirty, but cosmetically, this game rocks. It looked like it was only on location up until '82, judging by the tax stickers.

On the Flyback itself, around the "C-shaped" metal piece, inside the groove cut on the edge, is a copper wire that looks like it's all but corroded away. The game plays blind, but here's the funny thing: You can crank up the picture POT in the back, and the monitor glows white. At the very bottom of the screen, it almost looked like there was part of the score flickering in white (only one or two pixels away from the edge, however).

If the flyback is the problem, though... wouldn't there be *no* picture? Or is this still possible?

The multimeter read + & - 5.1V on the 5V, but went all the way up to 15V on the 12+ (with everything hooked up, measured at the PS itself). Would too much current cause this instead?

BTW: The game played blind just fine, but I'll admit... I suck at it when I can't see the ship. ;-)

Thanks in advance!

Someone having problems with a Phoenix? ;)

If the flyback was toast you'd have no power to the monitor and therefore nothing on it. As odd as it sounds, I'd cap the monitor before I did anything else. I've fixed monitors with mystery probs that nobody knew a fix for by simply doing a cap kit and moving on.

Heh... Yeah, that was the odd thing on it, all right... The game was just in immaculate condition on the inside, however - I couldn't find any name on the monitor boards... I know it isn't a G-07 or a WG (At least, not the WG that I've got a few of). I found a name on the tube, along with some writing (looked Korean) on a sticker, but nothing on the chassis or boards. Hell, even the KLOV listing for the game doesn't say what kind of monitor it uses.

One thing possibly worth noting, I saw something between two caps on the monitor board that looked like a spiderweb. I've seen capacitors that have completely blown up before (namely, on my old computer power supply), and it looked similar... but there didn't seem to be any shards of metal suspended in 'the web.' Worth a closer inspection, methinks... but probably just an old spiderweb.

I could tell that the monitor probably needs a cap kit *anyway* (even the white glow was slightly wavey) - I'll probably piggyback that kit on my upcoming order from Bob and save some shipping charges... I just hope I can find the make of the monitor boards - and also hope Bob carries a kit for it!

Thanks for the info, Tex... You're always a virtual cornucopia of knowledge... :)

Also, before I forget... Should the corrosion on the flyback be a concern here? Apparently it's still providing power to the tube and all, but it sure does look awful...
