When playing Phoenix, I've noticed that the game play slows down pretty substantially when there's a lot going on (many birds diving in unison, for example). Even the sound effects become pitched lower during these slowdowns.

The game is not crashing or otherwise behaving badly. I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on what might be causing this, and if replacing components may fix it?

Thanks in advance,

I was burning some roms for a phoenix, and I noticed a couple of them verified slower than the others when I burned them in spite of having the same rated access time (older, more used chips). With those slower chips in place, the game played slower than with the faster-verifying chips.

That's very interesting - thank you for your reply. Any ideas on how I might be able to identify which are the slower-running ROMs in my set?

Thanks,

Eric

You could pull the roms, dump them, and then verify the eprom to the dump image. Or just replace them one at a time and see if it eventually speeds up. Unfortunately I don't remember which roms I had that were slow, but yours could have different roms causing the slowdown.
