I bought on ebay today as I needed a joystick with Microswitches for my system 1 Indiana Jones the auction was for both joysticks and I had a feeling the incomplete one was either from an assault or Peter pack rat. Is there a difference between the two? Aside from the actual grip being different ?

Idk about the physical differences, but klov says Peter pack rat is an 8way stick and assault is a 4way...

The manuals for Assault and Peter Pack Rat show several of the parts are the same. Not sure if the shafts are the same or not, but the upper housings have different part numbers. Also of note, the manuals indicate PPR has leaf switches and and Assault has micro switches.

@Mylstar posted some other info Here... assuming you're missing the grip at the top. It could possibly be a logo stick as Stephen indicates the logo top also shares some parts with PPR, but he might be able to better help ID what you have.(he might also have parts to rebuild it... I got some NOS stuff from him to freshen up a saggy Xybots stick a while back)

although the shaft is different, it probably shares housing parts with a Xybots stick as well as the OG sticks from Gauntlet which I understand are cousins, though i didnt dload a manual to confirm that

Thanks for your input I'm setting it up as a leaf switch. I'm probably just going to buy a leaf switch joystick and take what I need to finish the bottom. Then from my research the top for ppr is one of the led switches and a battlezone shell but in blue. At this point it might be easiest to find a battlezone shell than to fine the actual blue piece. I just picked up the last hall effect pcb he had listed to finish off my road runner cp I bought. I've got the multicart coming so my goal is to just track down the panels I need. I've got two now plus the Joystick for indy and a partial for ppr. I saw takeman was making a multi cp but I'd rather just have the correct setup for each game. So I'll continue hunting I suppose

Sounds like you'll wind up with a really fun cab. I love the idea of the ease of swapping games around with the modular design of the System 1 cab. Out of the 5 officially released titles, I've played all but Roadblasters. I like PPR, but my all-time favorite is MarbleMadness. It's definitely on my grail list if I can manage to find one when the time/money/location all line up at the right point in time. I played PPR for the first time at CAX last year and had alot of fun. RR was pretty fun too, but if I was gonna chase a second cab it would be a PPR to go along side the MM.

I hope to see some pics of your progress soon.

from my research the top for ppr is one of the led switches
Just an observation: although the drawing in the manual looks like the button is similar to the LED Volcano button, it has a different part #... the Volcano button looks to be part # 62-039 and Peter Pack Rat button sports part # 62-042... not sure what the difference might be between the two.

Also, while puttering around I stumbled across This... it is a great resource if you have several other Atari games. It's not relevant to the particular joystick your working over ATM, but still a good resource to file away.

cheers!

That is a great resource to have at your disposal thanks for sharing! For me I think the best part of the system one setup is the quality across the board. I've been after one for Indiana Jones and picked up a Roadblasters about a month ago. For me the ability to play other classic games with some level of ease is too much to pass up. I've never played ppr before so once I get the pieces I need to finish up the control panel it will be a new experience! I'll definitely try to post updates along the way!

After additional research this looks like it is an assault stick. Not sure what my next move is but There is a difference between the two I may just have a local machine shop trim it down to proper size and drill the correct hole
