Which direction should the fan in this supply be blowing? The dead ones in some PSUs that I'm rebuilding aren't labeled as to their airflow direction - and don't spin. Based on the heavy dust trails it would seem as if they were mounted to suck air in which seems counter-intuitive. These supplies were pulled from Wing War cabs if that makes a difference.

Thanks

If I recall, the fan was at the top of the case and blew outward away from the supply. In other words it sucks cool fresh air in from the outside through the vent grill on the back of the supply case.

I rebuilt one of those a few weeks ago. Same deal with the fan. The unit "looked" like it had never been serviced...and it was blowing in to the supply. It was literally caked in crud...

with a power supply you really want the heat to exhaust out.

typically the side of the with the label is the direction it blows out. or, the part you can freely spin it with your finger, that's the side it's going to pull the air from.

But in this case, the arcade cabinet air will be much hotter than the outside air so sucking cooler air into the supply to cool it makes more sense.

The power supply is mounted under a floor panel in the cockpit of the game with a couple of inches of clearance above the top vent. The exhaust vent for the power supply just goes into the confined space with all of the other electronics, and there's one main exhaust fan at the back of the cab. It appears that despite how the fans appear to have been mounted before (label facing inward), I should still be forcing air out of the supply.

yeah, every power supply I've seen has them shooting out. Daytona USA is like that with those monster units (I replaced both of them though) but that has cabinet base fans too.

not saying channelmanic's wrong at all, I can kinda see it either way, but I would think facing it in you take all the heat from inside the cab and shoot it in, just how I see it. I'm actually unsure of how these XT units mount (where the fan's at, I've only seen the grill part I think), but I've seen them a lot of times shaped to the cabinet to where the power supply is exposed out the back, not enclosed.

in fact, the XT's probably are set to send air in, and the vented side is the out. I don't know much because every one I've seen was dead and I had to replace them heh

So, I ran into one of these supplies with an actual working fan and it does, in fact, suck air in with the fan and exhaust out the side vent (despite my skepticism, it does work pretty well). This is clearly appropriate for most arcade systems as the side vent is facing the outside/back of the cab when mounted. In the case of the Wing War sit-down cabs that I was working on I don't think it really matters as either way the fan blows its exhaust still goes to the inside of the cabinet and then taken care of by a larger fan at the back of the cab.

I've looked at rebuilding a few of these myself....some Peter Chou and some made by Happ. Does anyone happen to know if the Happ version uses the same caps and other parts?
