really nice looking sharp exidy pepper 2, minimal dings dents,
95% of the side art there, low burn monitor,
clean straight coin door, good cp graphics, no scratches on bezel or plastics
its been in storage or homes for 35 + yrs
only flaw with cabinet is someone zipped 2 dozen wood screws on each side to keep cab tight
UPDATE POWER SUPPLY REBUILT, LOOKS, SOUNDS, AND PLAYS GREAT screen pix up soon
its near reno nv, its the more rare, ded. factory upright vert. face mount monitor cab version.

I think this is a really clean looking cabinet - some of these sold recently in your price range on here and I paid around 3500 for mine - tempered to lift this one but wife will kill me - good luck with the sale
 
$1700 is a steal considering this is the 'dedicated' Pepper II cabinet, compared to the Venture factory conversions where the monitor lies flat.

The power supply issue should be really straightforward to anybody familiar with electronics. Those off the shelf Condor supplies Exidy decided to use (versus fabricating something in-house) are very well built and easy to repair. If Fastenal would ship coast to coast, I would seriously consider grabbing this.

PS - Caps alone might not be the issue. Check the current pass transistor along with the regulator IC. My bet is on the latter.
 
$1700 is definitely a great price for a working Pepper II, but full disclosure - seller can't confirm the game board works which would dramatically raise the price if you had to send it out. A faulty linear isn't the issue here.

That is correct, a low voltage that cannot be adjusted falls into two buckets:

1) The logic board (from a resistive load, not functionality perspective) is okay but the 2N3055 on the linear supply is bad or perhaps the regulator IC output is dead. The remainder of the power supply cannot provide enough current to keep the voltage at spec. Repair the power supply and then evaluate the logic board. It may or may not work if something on it is malfunctioning, separate from the bad power supply.

2) The linear supply is okay (2N3055 and regulator IC are doing their job with a 'normal' load) but the logic board has a current sink where a TTL or other part has a total or partial internal short and is drawing excessive current from the power supply. Usually, linear supplies will belt out current until a fuse blows, but not always, depending on the design. In this case, the logic board most definitely is nonfunctional and will require finding the shorted part at a minimum (can be a pain on a shared 5V rail) and then evaluating once the voltage is back to where it should be. Many times, you will find a baked or smoking hot part when testing and that part alone is the only failure point. I've gotten lucky many times in this regard.

It is pure speculation until you get in there and start troubleshooting, but either the power supply or logic board (or even both) can be to blame.

I had problems with my linear as well. Like you mentioned I had to replace the 2N6578 as well as the regulator IC (sorry can't remember the model number) inside.

Great to hear and that you also chose to fix the original than try to hack in a switching power supply. Linear supplies are surprisingly simple and easy to troubleshoot. If people would only give them a break understanding they are 40 years old but a handful of parts and a couple caps will get them back to essentially new and good for another 40 years.
