People who list stuff for sale then don't follow through...

I seem to have this problem on KLOV. I have attempted deals with several sellers (mainly senior members.....hmmmm, but other members as well) on KLOV, but more often than not, even if I am first to respond, and in some cases am told that the item is mine if I want it, the seller fails to follow through on sending the shipping cost, or their PayPal pay to information. This is really pissing me off. I've been on this site for over 2 years now, and have managed to complete only 4 deals. I would estimate that I have tried on about 50.

IS THERE OR IS THERE NOT A Preference for Senior Members to sell amonst themselves or their "friends" and ignore what is assumed in any market place: "First come First served"

Really, are other people's money any greener than mine? "If I sell to my buddy, I earn a favor..", or "gee, I thought there'd be more interest in my stuff -- I'm not selling now despite offers -- I'll wait until the market is a little more ripe and pretend that I am busy or ignore any further communications."

DON'T list if you don't intend to sell to the first taker.

Is it just me, or does anyone else have this problem in general, and especially with Senior Members?

You know, at least Ebay is fair in this respect - buy it now goes to the first taker.

Please comment on your experiences. Conspiracy Theory or BullsEye?

You're not alone mate, I've had this happen to me too. Not only here but other sites too.

I actually haven't had any problem buying on KLOV and I'm not exactly a senior member. If I want something, I don't bother making an offer- I just pay the full price and ask for a paypal address.

More importantly Hypersport, what is you avatar picture?! I think there are at least three guys on here that have used that same image and I have always wondered it's from.

The bulk of what happens is this. I PM these sellers concerning shipping to my zip code, and asking for the PayPal info, and they get back to me with "Yea, it's still available, followed by an excuse about how busy they are and they'll get back to me with that". Then, they either string me along for a little while, or just stop responding to my messages altogether. In either case, the deal falls through. I don't understand it.

I acutally don't know on this one -- it is the default picture that I got when I registered on KLOV. I keep meaning to update my avatar, but I just haven't got around to it yet.

Do these people typically have good or bad feedback?

All have 100% positive feedback (some very popular sellers ...). But, that feedback comes from people who actually strike a deal with said individuals. The feedback rules state that you need to have documented proof to leave negative feedback -- i.e. to have conducted a transaction. But, I don't really have documented proof, only a string of unanswered emails, and Private messages that go nowhere. The deals can't really be proven as pending either -- I would think that the requirement would be to have a message showing that the seller acknowledges me as the first in line, with a total price + shipping and PayPal info from the seller. Most of the deals I am complaining about never get that far due to lack of response from said sellers.

The overwhealming lack of response to this poll speaks volumes. Either 1.) I'm crazy, and have just been unlucky, OR 2.) Others agree, but don't want to expose themselves out of fear of being ignored and rejected even further.

Don't get me wrong, I love KLOV and find the information here invaluable. I just don't think I'll attempt purchases here any longer -- unless I post a want list.

Sale

When I list something for sale here, I usually have a shipped price in the post. It saves a couple of steps. Sometimes I get burned on shipping but oh well. Sunday I sold 6 items and 5 of them went to Oregon. Furthest point from me in the US. (most shipping charge)
I get 10-40 PMs a day. I try to respond to every one. I sell things in the order of the pms or the time stamp on the replys to the for sale post. It is hard to make everyone happy. But, there is a systematic way to make most people happy. I wish you luck with your purchases here. Other than bad timing, I have had good luck purchasing from several members here.

I agree with you on the shipped price and I have gotten burned to. It always seems to be someone on the west coast like Oregon or California that buys my stuff too. I sold a Samurai Shodown cart for $12.00 and it cost me $10.00 to ship to CA so I know how you feel.

I still feel that this is the best place to find the things I need and there are many good people on this site. I have had a few issues here but they have been resolved thru PM and email. I have had far more positive transactions than negative.

Personally, I'd like to see everything listed with a shipping price. I wouldn't mind paying an inflated shipping price if sellers would properly refund the difference (using the approved PayPal refund partial payment). I hate paying for Priority Flat Rate when normal Priority is generally cheaper for lighter items. I also have a formula that I use to compute total costs for PayPal. I am an Ebay seller, so know what a pain quoting shipping can be:

(cost of item + cost of shipping + $0.30 PayPal receive funds fee) / .971 PayPal 2.9% fee = total PayPal payment.

So, for a $40 board with $10.95 shipping, we get $51.25 / .971 = $52.78.

Now in reverse:

$52.78 * .029 PayPal fee = $1.53 ($52.78 - $1.53 = $51.25 remaining)
$51.25 - $0.30 PayPal receive funds fee ($51.25 - $0.30 = $50.95 remaining)
$50.95 = $40 (board) + $10.95 (cost of shipping)

- Buyer pays less by sellers not "guessing" at shipping costs
- Buyers don't have to send payments as "gifts" because sellers will not lose money to PayPal.
- Buyers get full protection of PayPal.
- Sellers don't lose money to PayPal
- Sellers only have to worry about charging enough for shipping.
- If sellers quote inflated shipping to cover various shipping rates, then they can refund excess shipping charges via PayPal refund partial payment. Just make sure to state the fact that you WILL refund excess shipping charges in your listing.

I put this here, as I hope that it will make more transactions run smoother, and hopefully save time and money on both sides - especially on shipping charges. And, just maybe, I won't have to wait for a seller to quote me an accurate shipping charge which never comes.....

I do something similar but I include the cost of packing materials per item in the shipped price. I am always surprised when people pay as a gift payment. I never ask for this and take in account the fees in the shipped price. Some people continue to do it. Personally, I wont do it. If some one I dont know wants me to pay as a gift. I just ad some extra to cover the fees or cancel the transaction. I like the buyer protection. I think it is a little shady to ask for a gift.

I haven't really had a problem with members on this site.

I also give both options on the PayPal. I quote them the price with the PayPal fees or let them gift it to me. I don't stress either one, just lay the cards on the table and let the buyer choose. I always pay the extra to get the PayPal protection.

Hypersport: Whereabouts in the fancy state of Colorado do you reside???

The last sale I conducted I charged $XX.XX + Actual shipping. When Ireceived payment for the item I shipped the item, then PMed the person and said hey it cost me $xx.xx and they sent me a second paypal payment for the actual shipping amount.

I understand many wouldn't want to do that as a trust issue but...it's what I have done.

Sometimes for odd sized things, etc that I have not shipped before, I use the online shipping calculator with USPS and FedEX. If you have the correct weight and measurements. It is surprisingly accurate. I do this a lot for international shipping with Ebay. It makes sending an invoice to the buyer much quicker.

... It is surprisingly accurate. .

I've never used it for quoting shipping, but I've seen way too many inflated shipping quotes from these automated things on Ebay. How much control do you have over putting in handling charges and adding margin to these shipping quotes? They probably don't do well with multiple purchases and combined shipping...

I shipped a PCB to Austrailia Wednesday. The USPS shipping quote was within $7.00 Of the actual price.

On packing materials. I just ad that on top of the quote, then send an invoice to the buyer.

I combine shipping if i can put more than one item in the same box. The automated system on Ebay does not do well at this if the buyer does the quote. I do a flat fee for shipping on most Ebay items. For international shipping. I get the quote then send the amount to the buyer before he purchases.

while i have not bought or sold here yet. I do buy and sell quite a bit ( not pinball stuff)

It really does go both ways. You get buyers and sellers that are tossers.

Usually a motivated seller gets a hold of you quickly and wants to be paid.

But maybe pinball sellers are odd for all I know.

I just bought my close encounters machine this past week.

I had been in contact with the seller since the beginning of October. I had not heard from the seller for about 6 weeks. Seller contacts me out of the blue last week and says its still available. I go up and get it. Go figure

Looks like I need to keep this thread fresh. Just dealt with another KLOV seller who managed to string me along for nearly a week - said he had all this stuff he needed to get rid of because he was out of space. I contact him, he replies but won't send his info, won't send any pictures, threatens to put everything in a box with no packaging material, and tells me to expect a broken and mangled mess when it arrives. I still offer several hundred dollars for this lot of junk, but he refuses to send his PayPal info, won't make the deal unless I do PayPal as a gift (I offered to pay the PayPal fees as seen in my previous post...), he acts like he's doing me a favor, and as a last resort, he makes sure to offend me to get rid of me.

DON'T LIST ITEMS FOR SALE THAT YOU DON'T HAVE OR REALLY DON'T INTEND TO SELL, AND DON'T BRAG ABOUT STUFF YOU DON'T HAVE, AND DON'T MAKE OFFERS THAT YOU CAN'T OR DON'T WANT TO HONOR.

This is rediculous.

On the bright side, I have managed to make 3 other deals -- go figure.
