people and unrealistic prices

Don't forget 'antique' now making it into the gaming world, that adds another $1,000 right there.

This does happen way too much especially in pins down here. If it is crazy priced I won't even try but even when you do try and reason with them they just don't understand they won't get thousands of dollars. Even worse it non-working games at outrageous prices they claim with a simple fix will sell for triple but even working wouldn't sell for their asking price.

If they claim that it's a simple fix, best question to ask is "Why haven't you gotten it fixed, then?"

This chaps my butt, and it's common in flat screen TV's. They will post a unit that sells for $600 working all day long, obviously needs a $400 decoder board, but they post "Worked fine last week. Probably a simple fix" and ask $575. Really?? If you know how to fix it (or took it to a shop) and it's so easy, why haven't you? If you don't know how to fix it, where do you get off saying "probably a simple fix".

Grrrr....

Reminds me of this gem from a local CL ad ..
"I have three arcade games for sell they all work, But they have minor issues, I know they're minor because i had them serviced when i lived in Houston and if they work and you have a clear screen everything else is minor."

WTF?

Sounds reasonable to me...... I also love the "I just put $5000 into it, all it needs is a $0.32 part that takes 27 seconds to install and it'll be perfect, I just don't want to put anymore time into it". The "simple fix" gets me every time. Sometimes it's true like with my Super Pacman but most of the time its BS. My ex sister in law picked up this pile of crap car that only ran on 3 cyl, she showed me all the records it came with and how well it was taken care of..... it only needed a tune up! Yeah, right..... I open the hood and every ignition part is brand new. All it really needed was a new exhaust valve on cyl 2, some piston rings, a couple bearings, some gaskets and minor other things to run as good as used.

On Ebay somebody had a motion cockpit Chase HQ for over $1,000,000, did Dr Evil set that price? Yeah interesting rare game, but seriously, WTF??

Oh and the kicker was he added it was in "as-is condition"

Yea, I recently picked up a Bally Star Trek pinball in fairly rough shape from some 20 something with a baby on her hip. She went thru the motions to tell me that it had been her dads machine, and that it was an incredibly valuble machine, worth way more than she was asking, because someone told her that they only made 6 or 7 of them, and she was only selling it because she needed the money. (By this time it had been on CL for 6 months and had finally came down to a more realistic price). I took a IPDB printout with me when I picked it up to show her that 6 or 7 was actually 6 or 7 thousand

He told me how they sell for more online and are all over eBay for way more than that so i pulled out my phone and did a search. I showed him the results proving he was f'ing crazy. He told me that he paid more than that 2 years ago so he'll hold on to it till its a "classic like Pacman" and he can make his money back.

Just tell him how anyone can just buy a MKII pcb and put it in a working cab for way less than his asking price. Or tell him anyone can build a MAME arcade game that costs less and can play more, and better, games. Make him understand that there are better deals to be had for way less than what he thinks he can get. And tell him how people who aren't used to buying and collecting arcade games get duped all the time by retailers/online sellers into paying high prices for arcade games. Show him the error of his ways! :p

All over ebay for more than $2500? I don't see any.

Theres one easy way to deal with this. Kindly tell the people that thier game is just not worth that price anymore. Offer what its worth. Watch them get pissed. 4 mos later hear back and buy it for the price you wanted.

Games

Yeah , i know what yall mean. There is a a donkey kong in georgia, that (a) is not in original cab,(b) cab lookked pretty bad(c) the monitor was shot. I offered 200.00 which i felt was a very generous offer.that was 10 months ago.. Its still for sale at 500.00...lmao... What? Or he'll take a running car or truck with ac. I purchased a gradius from him and was told the monitor was bad and didnt come on. When i get it home the monitor is fine and the motherboard was fried.told me they had been playing it and had to use quarters, but didnt have they door key..its funny they must have corroded because i didnt find any quarters in there, but was all fine i only wanted the cab for a project anyway.lol, when i offered the 200.00 he said"make me a real offer" i politely told him, my offer was actually more than i would normally pay. He told me it was worth 2000.00. So i asked why he only wanted 500.00 he told me if wouldnt pay it someone else would. I said good luck!!

Another question, $895.00 BIN on ebay currently for a Paperboy, good original shape, unrestored, a couple hundred too high at least?

I miss all kinds of stuff around here for too much. I seem to remember some shitty 90's gottlieb pins dude was asking like $1500 ea. Also missed on a Mr Do and Tempest (both sold not working) for $600 ea. Plenty of assholes trying to find suckers to pay $600 for Golden Tee 2k3 or so. Lately been seeing a bunch of Atari 2600's for $100+, and the ad disappears at some point. I may just sell mine with my duplicate carts if they're fetching that much around here.

Maybe he should take it back to where he bought it and try to get 50% back.

Seriously, all this buying/selling/speculation is a tough game. I've learned that it's probably best to stick with stuff that you want. I'll buy mostly anything at $100 or less.

I'd PROBABLY go $200 for something that I WANT and think I'll play.

Beyond that, well, I'm a cheap bastard.

I saw an ad on CL last week for a Final Fight in a dynamo cab,Dedicated Road Runner, and a dedicated NArc. Guy wants $650 each firm. I told him to keep my number if the prices go down which I'm sure they won't Hope he's ready to make a permanent space for them lol

Other notables.......

$1000 1943 in a Dynamo
$900 Asteroids
$1400 TMNT
$500 birdie king
$2000 super pac
$600 DK3

As many have stated before, the general public think these games cost thousands. I know I did until I started getting into the hobby. Who would think you could get this huge piece of electronic equipment for $100? The few retailers out there likely do charge $2500 for an MKII...I don't doubt it. The general public also has a overinflated sense of worth about a lot of things...

I think all of these stupid pawn and auction shows are having an influence on people lately. I know some folks have always thought anything "vintage" is worth its weight in gold but I feel these shows make it even worse. Hell...a friend of mine was at an auction recently(not arcade stuff) and not only were things going for WAY too much but multiple people were doing the Dave Hester "YEEEEEEEEEEEEP!" garbage.
