I wanna get better at Pengo , anyone got tips on getting high scores ?

Me too. The later stages really kill me with how fast the sno-bees are. I've only been able to get something like 80-90k. I think I see the value of breaking the ice cubes they "hatch" out of before they hatch, and I'm also starting to think it's very rarely worth it to go for the three diamond blocks in a row....

One of the guys who comes to the CAX show each year (Mark Robichek...sp.) is an expert at Pengo...his high scores are still on my machine :) .

My best is about 120K I think it is...I do know that you do reach a point where the game "restarts" in that it reverts to level 1 difficulty and you then rebuild to the higher difficulties again (basically you begin again)...I got there on my 120K game.

I'm by no means an expert player, but I often score around 150K on Pengo. What I do is go for lining up the blocks if it is an easy and quick board. Usually it's easy to spot as soon as the board "spawns" whether it'll be worth it or not.

If the blocks are very spread out and will take a lot of time to line up I immediately start destroying as many blocks holding sno-bees as I can and try to clear the board as quickly as I can in order to get maximum bonus points. I try to stun as many enemies as I can while walking along the walls and try to push blocks to crush them as opposed to walking over them. More bonus points that way.

I'm sure there are many other better Pengo players out there than me. I'd also be interested in learning their techniques.

My high is around ~540K. The three diamond blocks have to be close or otherwise arranged to be simple to line up, otherwise I don't even pay attention to them, especially at the higher levels. The game "turns over" after level 16 and restarts at 1. I try to break as many of the blocks with the Snow-Bees (the ones that flash with the ball in them at the beginning of the level) before they hatch, especially after level 10 when the Sno-bees really haul. I'll try to stay near the side of the screen in a place where there are plenty of ice blocks to shove, yet you are still able to turn around and push the wall to disable the Sno-bees as a last resort.

After round 10 it becomes an exercise of killing them as fast as possible. If not, they're eventually going to get you.

thanks for all the Pengo tips !!

So I need to start using the wall more to stun them , destroy the blocks before they hatch and only try to line up the diamonds when they are close together , which alot of times I'd try to line them up but it wastes too much time and I end up getting killed .

Not as clear cut as some of the other games, I know. If you're at CAX and they have one, I'll show you in person. I used to be able to drop 200-300K pretty routinely. I'll have to practice up on my 48 in 1...

Try to stay where you have blocks where you can slide both horizontally and vertically too. The big trick is to just stay alive after round 10, don't worry about the points. Once you get to where you can turn it over (goes back to level 1 and starts over after level 16) then you can start worrying about getting the blocks together in the earlier rounds. In my highest game ever, I turned it over from round 16 to 1 3 times I think. You're going to get caught in the higher rounds, it's almost unavoidable.

My best so far is 143K. Pengo does have patterns if you want to play that way. I've worked out most of the pattern (It's been awhile, so I'll need to refresh my memory) for the first level after Power up (Before the Attract screen is shown) so I can get the 10K right away.

I got tired of figuring out the patterns so I just do like most here, get the diamond blocks when they are close, if they aren't just go on a killing spree.

I also did a "Modernization" of Pengo called "FrostByte Freddie". It's free, and available from here: http://www.arcaderestoration.com/index.asp?OPT=10&DATA=11&CBT=20

Here's an observation:

Whenever I try to line up the "special" blocks to get the 5K or 10K bonus, I swear that the Sno-Bees know what I'm up to and somehow get more intelligent and start homing in on me big time.

Is this just my imagination? Anyone else notice this?
