Just curious if anybody had an easy way to peel the protective paper off of old NOS marquees. Have a few of them and none of them peel at all, think time made them break down and not want to come off. I tried a few things (simple green, wd-40) but don't want to use anything stronger like adhesive removers because some will eat plastics. I had one a while back I picked at piece by piece that took forever and still never got it all off.
Anybody ever tried this and had any luck?

Yep actually tried a hairdryer last night, didn't do anything and I didn't want to risk getting it to hot and distort it. Also cant really put it in a hot car yet as we are still getting below freezing here at night.

Goo Gone works but it also removes the paint on the marquee as I sadly found out on my NOS 1943 marquee...:(

I used rubbing alcohol. Soaked a small section of the paper, covered it with several layers of alcohol soaked paper towels. Used a plastic scraper and carefully pealed the paper off. Took 45 minutes to do one marquee but it looks awesome.

lighter fluid or naptha also works wonders on that old adhesive without damaging inks

I just cleaned the Q-bert marquee you didn't get from me. I found it easy to soak the paper in lighter fluid and use a plastic spatula to scrape the paper. I got my q-bert done in about an hour. Use novus2 at the end. the Paper is on the unpainted side.

Yep, that's why I am asking before I try anything, don't want to find out the hard way!!

I will try rubbing alcohol and see if that works, Thanks!

Start with the least intrusive method, then work forward. Mine have always come off fine but they've also all been Nintendo marquees.

I soaked a Jr Pac cabaret NOS marquee in a tub of water. Set for an hour. Paper came off easily and used Goo Gone to rub off adhesive. No scratches and looks great.

Thanks for all the replies
The winner was... rubbing alcohol. Took about 20 minutes, got a lot faster when I figured out how wet it needed to be the most efficient to get the biggest chunks off. Can probably do the next one in 10-15 minutes. Thanks again.

I gotta do a whole piece of old plexi glass later tonight..
its got the same stuff on it.

We use goo gone and let it soak in before doing anything.
Then use something plastic to scrape it off (similar to a credit card).
Did this with a Sinistar marquee a while back and more recently a plexi for Stunt Cycle.
Hit it with some Novus at the end and that gets a lot of the little imperfections out and also any remaining glue.

The alcohol residue don't fog up the plexi? Interesting.

It did a little if you let it dry on there, when I was done, I put some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel, wiped the whole marquee with a light coat and then followed up right up with a clean towel before it dried and it left nothing but shiny marquee!
