Hey Matt, did you make that adapter? Looks like special attention was taken to twist the video wires around each other and secure them in place that way. Personal preference, or does it help shield the signals and improve video quality?

This is the right pinout for that board. Have the same one here. You can reburn the roms with the defender white romaet also which runs fine on this board

I doubt it makes any difference. Just trying to keep it looking clean and easy to follow.

Seriously, you guys rock. I am assuming this is one bootleg that one SHOULD hang onto. Matt/richo, how poor or good is the gameplay compared to Defender? Are there any minor differences?

I like how you wired the settings box. Is there anything in particular to note on how to do it? Where did you get that nice little box setup?

It is a cool bootleg board. Neat to have a Williams system condensed into a normal-sized two-board stack. The hardware/software is essentially a straight rip-off, so the game plays the same. Besides cosmetic things like the title screen, I don't recall any gameplay changes. But honestly, I haven't played it much (I had a real Defender cab for a while, and now a JROK multi-WMS board).

Sweet, you would also think this would be a much more table system with so many less connectors, etc.

Yeah, I would think its a keeper, and cool piece of bootleg history.

Really? Is that what you have running in there now? I'll have to try that! I remember figuring out how the ROMs mapped and trying to get normal Defender running in there. I believe I used the red set though, and it didn't work. Poking around the bootleg code I found several changes where I wasn't sure what they were doing... so I figured I'd have to figure all those out and patch the Defender code to make it work, which was more work than I wanted to do so I just left it as Defense Command. But if the white version works unmodified, that's fantastic!

Yeah, there's even a court case behind it:

http://digital-law-online.info/cases/215PQ405.htm

In there it says "The game created by the Artic circuit boards contains an error which was present in early versions of the Williams computer program – it displays the wrong score value for destroying a particular alien symbol". This confirms that it is running a modified "white" ROM set.

Thanks for the link. I've read that reposted on another site. It's interesting how they have to break down the frantic experience of playing Defender into (and I am paraphrasing) "player controlled symbols that interact with other computer controlled symbols in specific ways".

I had the board handy because im in the process of reburning the white romset to try on my board. I've seen it running on another guys board here so i know it works. I have worked.out the rom mapping if you want the file yet me know

I've got the mapping scribbled down in a notebook somewhere.... If you've got that info handy, you could just post it here for everybody. Thanks.

You guys sure waste alot of time and effort on garbage. OP being the worst offender here ever. It doesn't matter if it works, what it's missing, who made it, or anything of the sort. Bootlegs are worthless. Always. They were worthless then, are worthless now, and will be worthless forever.

Strip them for anything socketed, and chuck 'em in the trash. Nobody is ever going to buy a bootleg PCB for any amount of cash worth your time. Might as well be 8-liners. They are ALL garbage IMO.

Well, I can't speak for the OP, but I have no interest in selling mine. Just enjoying it for the gameplay and the piece of history that it is. When you're not in this hobby for money, it is a lot more fun.

I can see your point but bootlegs are all we had here until the mid to late 80s so there loved as much as originals.

Sure, I'll post it over the weekend.
