Does the title (u3/u4) eprom need to be programed in a different way than the u1/u2 eproms? I tired bb to mario bros. the game plays fine, but the name slot just reads 'slot 1'
I see a program called PCNamer but it seems to be for PCs not Apples.

I have the 8t bios chip changed and can force a name change there but rather have it done on the pcb game card.

I recently acquired a burner so I could burn pc-10 roms. I used PCNamer and it worked like a champ on my windows 7 machine. It's been a while since I've had a macbook but as I recall there were programs like VMWare and such that allow you to run a windows program on a mac. I dual booted mine with boot camp (I think) as I had an intel mac book. A quick google for windows wrappers for mac produced wineskin and vst as options.

So burning a mame file, or equivalent, will not give me the proper data for the name IC then?

Why does the game files work and not the Name ID IC?

Thanks for the reply above. I will check out that program and see if it works with my old computer.

I wish I had an answer for you. I didn't get that deep into it as I had success with PCNamer and that was good enough for me.

The files in MAME are the real files and are designed to be used with the security chip. You have to have both.

If you are just trying to have the name show up, then you need to use the PCNamer program and remove the security chip.

Okay, Thank you for the clearing that up. I am guessing the security chip is the small 8pin dip IC then.

The strange thing is that I have a BB PCB that someone put Popeye on. It shows the Popeye title and still has the BB 8pin IC in the card. The PCB has two different name ICs, (really two full sets of ICs), the original name IC for BB and the burned Popeye name IC. Both show their proper name with the BB security chip in place.
