Anyone know if they are painted, laminate, or vinyl or what?

My untrained eye can't tell. It looks like I can see wood grain texture through them. So I'm thinking they are painted.

Trying to restore one, but want it as close to original as I can get. Thinking I'll belt sand the sides down to bare wood, redo the busted up corners and refinish.

Here's my other post about particle board repairs.

I've seen the vinyl at Home Depot (same as HAPP?) doesn't seem like it's quite the same, although it would look nice. I suppose I could try painting and if it looks like poo poo I can put the vinyl on the sides and call it good.

If it's paint, what paint do you all use? And I have a commercial automotive sprayer so mixing wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks!

Depends which type of Playchoice you have. There have been some discussions in the past before but I don't believe it is vinyl, laminate, or regular paint. I think the Playchoice is a bit different as well at least my Punch-out is. Mine has a very high gloss where other type of Nintendo cab owners don't have this level of gloss they say. I bought some vinyl that I thought looked closest to the finish, but had to buy a huge roll of it.

It is a high gloss gel coat paint I believe where you can see the wood grain a little through it. Be careful sanding too much. It is very thin layers of veneer on top. The first layer appears vertical grained but if you sand too deep you'll go through that layer and see the grains underneath in the next layer which change direction. It won't look good.

I opted to do mine with a high gloss black vertical grade laminate and like it - but this was after a failed paint attempt and resanding. I had dust contamination and lots of micro bubbles.

High gloss gel coat paint sounds about right for what I'm seeing. Albeit faded and scuffed over the years, it's definitely shinier that your average vinyl.

Any recommendations on paint to try?

TimePiloteer, like you I think I'll try paint first and cover it with vinyl after it looks terrible. Haha. Since it's paint now, all I really need to do is scuff the top coat before repainting. Plus I have all winter to experiment with different paints on scrap wood.

What's the best way to remove the old decals? Heat gun and plastic razor blade?

Laminate all the way. It just comes out so nice and is easier than paint.
Like rolls of laminate sheeting? Peel and stick? How do you cut the edges that line up with the t-molding? Mine would be cut so terribly. Plus around the speaker grills and things...

Vertical grade laminate. Sometimes you can find it at Depot or Lowes. I bought mine from topcabinethardware.com. Even Amazon has it in Black.

Use a flush trim bit on a router and the edges will be perfect. Hailrazer has a thread where he explains how to do it.

(Sorry got the person wrong)
