paypal sticks it to us again WARNING

I used to be pissed that I was forced into a premier account, but I just accept it now. Paypal appeased me by pre-filling out my shipping labels, simplifying the shipping process incl. discount, and giving free USPS delivery confirmation.

The only thing I wish Paypal would let me do is organize/categorize transactions. That is a functionality I really, really need. Especially when I get payments with no specific heading by the buyer.

Why does this suck? PayPal is providing a service. They should get paid. You said you called them? Well, there you go. They need to pay that person that took your call. I'm also willing to bet that because you did call them that they lost money on your transaction as a result. You should feel lucky. If you aren't using Ebay, then mail a check or money order, just like the old days. Or, get a real merchant account with a bank and see if you like that better. I highly doubt it.

Everyone seems to forget life before PayPal. Personally, I am very happy to pay them the fees in return for my ability to accept credit cards from people. How cool is that? Me, John Q. Public accepting credit cards?? Whoa.

You take credit cards and you're fine with their fees. That's great for you. Me, I don't like the fees. Since paypal's inception, one of their big marketing ploys/gimmics was that it was free. And they are taking that away more and more. I am happy to send and receive checks for things I buy and sell. Since I don't do much of either, it's not a big deal for me. I always offer to send a seller a check so that they can save the paypal fees. A few like and appreciate that.

Yeah somone once told me Love was free....
That is a load of B.S. too.
the fact is nothing is free.
The bank is using your money to lend to their other customers at a high rate,
and giving you squat in return for your checking. You already have the checks
so it's easy to swallow. Paypal provides a service. All service goes up in price
with demand. I'm not defending them, or this monitary system, but it is what
it is.

Wow - so in other words I need to buy a bunch of PCB's, list them as tested good on eBay and the buyer will file a dispute but Paypal will find in my favor ............ that's just flat out scary. Just rmember Paypal isn't FDIC insured. They are not a bank which means they can play by a whole different set of rules.

It's also flat out bullshit.

That may be true, but the "protection" that Paypal touts is laughable at best. They will not do anything if the seller sends you anything. It doesn't have to be what they said they would send you, just a box with something in it. I bought something where I double checked with the seller that it would be working, when it arrived it didn't. When I asked the seller about it he was silent until I filed with Paypal. Here was Paypal's resolution -

You have chosen to escalate your dispute to a PayPal claim. By ending
communication with the seller, you are asking PayPal to investigate the
case and decide the outcome. As part of our investigation, PayPal reviewed
any communication you may have had in the Resolution Center.

Our investigation into your claim is complete. As stated in our User
Agreement, the claims process only applies to the shipment of goods. It
does not apply to complaints about the attributes or quality of goods
received. Therefore, we are unable to reverse this transaction or issue a
refund.

If it's an ebay auction as a seller where you state the condition working they will ALWAYS side with the buyer then the buyer could send an empty box and screw the seller. If it's some person to person transaction that might be a different story especially if they have nothing for proof of the description which is what I am guessing here.

Paypal still is free.

Free to have an account
Free to use to send money.

Also:
Free to receive stub hub payments.

I am not much of a seller or buyer, so I've only got the free paypal account. I've never "upgraded" (as they call it) my account to where I have to pay fees. As such, when I do sell something and someone wants to use paypal, I make it clear it can't be a credit card type paypal payment, it must be a payment from an existing paypal balance.

So I make a deal and the guy pays me paypal no problem. But wait, paypal charged me fees. I call them and they told me they just instituted a policy change "about 2 weeks ago" that if the transaction is marked as a purchase, it's charged fees, even if payed from existing balances on a free account.

So you free paypal account users, make sure to specify the payment has to be marked as personal rather than purchase. Just another example of ebay owned paypal rolling over people and not making it worthwhile to use their service.

They are charging fees now because they do not want to be labeled as a socialist organization by the right. :p

Mail a check, are you kidding? The post office will charge you (one shiny new postage stamp please) to mail the check. We should all get something for nothing...

Well, with my bank, I can go with the automated check system and they will pick up the cost of postage to send a check...

Saltbreez

Any way you go there is going to be cost involved. If you mail a check you have the cost of postage and the cost of a check. Money orders cost money and you still have to pay postage.

If they were socialist, they'd only charge fees if you had received more than $100. Then they'd charge you $50 of it as fees, and make you pay another member's dentist or something.

In SoViet Russia, we don't have PayPal.
We pay to have Pals.

If you don't like the fees, then DON'T use them. Good luck with that.

I have been a PayPal member since DAY ONE. SERIOUS. And, I remember how AWESOME and MAGICAL it was that I was able to accept credit cards form people without getting a merchant account from a bank. Wow! Anyways, you all seem to forget life before PayPal. If you want to go back to mailing checks, waiting for them to clear, and then shipping the goods, then good for you. Me? I want the convenience for ME AND MY CUSTOMERS. For me, that's all that matters.

Again, you DO NOT HAVE TO USE PAYPAL. It's optional. So quit complaining if you hate it. You don't need PayPal and Ebay to get through life. It's all optional. If you want to have a garage sale every week at your house and only accept cash, then good for you. ME? I will sell goods to a HUGE audience and pay Ebay AND Paypal the money they deserve for giving me the opportunity to get those eyeballs on my goods and then effortlessly getting me the money. Thank you interwebs!

Paypal is all well and good until the first scheister rips you off with a frivolous claim. Personally, I think Ebay transactions have dropped because of their PayPal only policy.
I still ask and most sellers still will take a money order. But, even to ask a seller that anymore, you have to navigate through an Ebay FAQ screen which would lead you to beleive the seller only takes Paypal. So, in my opinion everyone loses. Seller loses potential bidders and fees to PayPal. Ebay loses fees due to lower ending prices. I really hardly ever bother anymore unless it's something I REALLY want. Saves me alot of money from buying a lot of crap I used to though. :)

you anti paypal people probably keep yer cash stuffed in a mattress or something too.

Thank you, you saved me the effort of expressing the same thing.

Obviously, you have never been ripped off by any of the other scams out there. I started using EBay about a month after they started. I gave it up in 97 or 98 after a series of forged money orders or bad checks cost me a lot of money. Paypal is just the latest forum for scam artists and lowlifes to operate in. So far, my bad debt experience since signing up with PayPal has been very low. I am sure that sooner or later I will get stung for a large amount eventually, but at this point I am satisfied with the balance of fees vs convenience.

That's USPS giving you an online discount and free (utterly useless) delivery confirmation, not paypal.
yep, how many times have you taken a large number of pre labeled packages into the post office and handed them to the clerk. They ask "are they ready to go?", you reply "yes", they take the stack and toss them in the bin. Bye Bye delivery conf. If they dont manually scan each one into the system when they recieve them, they are never entered. Ive taken as many as 50 packages at once in, and checked the tracking a week later to find that none of them were ever valid

PayPal charging 3% to process payments, iirc. The current discount rate to process Visa/MC purchases for merchants is 2-4%. They are just passing the costs on to the consumer, and it's not surprising considering all the bad debt out there and the tough economy.

Go to your bank.
Sign up for Online Banking & Bill Pay.
When you need to pay someone, set them up as a new Merchant under the Bill Pay options. If the bank cannot ACH the money (that is, if the Merchant is not listed in the gigantic merchant database) they will just generate a check and send it.

The bank will not notice that it's Bob Roberts, and not Verizon or Comed or Comcast. There's just too many payments that go out to check them all. Plus, they won't care. If they got you paying bills, they've got you for three years (on average), which is worth way more than the cost of stamp.

Yeah, I think they figure if they get you paying all your bills online, then you'll feel that you need that service and it's too much of a hassle now to change banks.
