Paypal Forcing Currency conversions ?!?

Alright, I just tried to send you $1 Steph.

It said "You will send 1.00 USD, Buyer will receive .... CND" (or whatever the canadian abbreviation is)

The "USD" and "CND" fields were boxes that could be changed.

So I changed your box to "USD", and it said "you will send $1.00 USD, Buyer will receive $1.00 USD"

I sent it through and it said I sent you $1 USD.

So it may be as simple as making sure all your customers make sure to specify it's USD. Big pain in the ass either way.

Wow .. yes, that worked !

I got your $1 in US funds !

---

So you're saying that people now have to make the specific selection
to send me payment in US $ rather than converting to CDN ?

Is this new ?
I've never heard of this before... !

What a P.I.T.A
(...I'll have to follow-up with Paypal )

But big thanks for the clarification.

Steph

This is new...

Yes, that's exactly what I had. I've never seen it before, it must have just started and on my end (as on yours, reversed) it's got it auto selected that you'll receive CDN since you're in Canada. If you click the selective box it gives you like 30 different currency options.

I HATE how they constantly change things. Now you've got to hound all your customers to make sure they click the right damn box because Paypal wanted to get cute.

Exactly ... it must be a new "feature" they added very recently.

It defaults to convert to the recipients native currency,
regardless of any other currencies you can hold in your account.

Sad how none of their techs knew anything about it when I called...

Yes, that will indeed be a pain.
... and Paypal did not do it to be "cute"...,
it's a blatant attempt to rip people off by enabling a conversion that's not needed,
and getting the associated fees.

Bas----ds ! ;-)

Thanks again for helping to figure this out...

Steph, this is exactly what happened when I sent you funds the other month for the Quantum chips. I noticed the second time I was able to choose USD instead of CAD. I think that maybe you'll need to have purchasers use the USD option instead.

No problem Steph, glad we figured out at least what was causing the problem. you're right too about them trying to screw people on the fees, BTW they don't MENTION the conversion fees, and since they do it along with the conversion, unless you break out a calculator on the sender's side they'd never even know! It says Canadian is .7309 right now, if they subtract .05 from the final number nobody would catch it.

SHADY

Yah, I guess I'll have to specify to buyers to make sure that there is no conversion
and leave the money in US funds.

.... or I could just move to the US .. ;-)

(... not likely with the Political circus going on there right now ,
.... heck, some of you might want to move up here ! ;-)

I had issues making a payment since thy went to this new format witch sucks cause it doesn't say witch one is gift and witch one is not but I event picked the first on that says backed by paypal and added 4%..... this is my ppal greif lol

Hi steph,

No issues on my end here receiving payments in USD, no automatic conversion occuring.

You should look into using PayPal.me service which you can send quick and easy link to customer. It is possible to specify the amount and currency too :)

Thanks for the tip.
I'll certainly look into it.

Cheers,

Paypal has been interesting the last week...delay in email notifications have been driving me crazy. Both my site and Ebay would normally be instant....had emails from them delayed by 48 hours. Makes it real tough doing 20 to 40 orders a day....

Looks like it's now on track. These currency changes you mention may have been the cause.

At least you don't have to pay those conversion fees 2x now, as long as the sender knows and makes the change. That's the tough part. ;)

Bastards just did the same thing to my paypal account. Someone sent me US currency, but they converted to CDN.

Can they actually do this without your permission?

Obviously they make money on the exchange, but it should be a choice. Fucking bullshit. I lose on the forced exchange, then again to exchange back to US.

Total F'N bullshit!!

Did anyone call Paypal yet to complain or to see if they can switch it back?

It was convenient to have the account in two currencies, the way they have done it now is just a pure cash grab.

Look at post #23, it is a choice. The choice of the person sending the money.

If Paypal won't change it, then the quick solution is to refund the money when it happens and tell the person sending the money what they need to do.

I just called and they said, sorry, at the moment we can not do anything about it.....WTF.

How about at least an email, a warning of some type for Pete's sake. How can they convert your money without even asking??? Isn't there any type legality issue here?

Ahhh got ya, I will try it out and see what happens.

This is an eloquent solution, however, it might offend some buyers. The last thing some of us sellers need to do is poke the bear. In this day and age, buyers freak out on you if you don't over-communicate, under-promise, and over-deliver.

Paypal has become a necessary evil at this point. Surely there has to be some other competitor out there that could rise to the challenge? Most of my local banks offer e-payments. Cripes, I think you can even send someone money via Facebook.

Surely Google has to have a better option? Isn't there something called Google Wallet?

Heyhey..this was me that paid you. I have since been refunded and paid you with all US funds but from a buyers POV I gotta say, paypal is sneaky.

Since you are in Canada it never crossed my mind to change that drop down box.
Just enter your email...click next a couple times and that's it.

But.....it's new, I am sure there will come a time for some of us when it's actually necessary too but for now, all we gotta do is remember to use that drop down box if our seller needs USD. Sellers will have to remember to tell their customers too. A PIA? Yep but not the end of the world.
