My wife and I visited the "Pawn Stars" pawn shop a couple days ago. Here is an update on a few things... the Pac Man cocktail sold almost two weeks ago to a guy from California... and the KISS pinball "went right away" apparently... Just thought I would mention it.

I want that shirt.

The History Channel one?

Is this the same shop which bought a worn-out Atari 2600 for $100 (probably worth $20), and whose owner made an insulting low-ball offer for a 1951 Yankees baseball with authentic DiMaggio and Mantle signatures?

Atari 2600 with a box of 50 to 100 games for $100, yes. Pawn shops buy low and sell high you know. No one is forcing them to sell there. That ball was in pretty terrible shape...

Insulting low? That ball was in horrible shape. These dudes are a retail shop, and need to make money. They wouldn't have been able to sell that ball for any kind of profit.

I didn't see that many games there - and the ones I saw were common titles.

I've been collecting 2600 stuff for years, and there's no two ways about it: they overpaid on this one by a lot. Like you said, that's unusual for a pawn shop to do. They should've done their research first.

That ball was in pretty terrible shape...

That ball was the one year those signatures would appear on a ball together if signed at the same time. The signatures were clear enough to be authenticated. I see balls in similar condition with a collection of Yankees go for a couple of thousand...and those balls don't include Mantle's moniker.

The owner scoffed at the offer - as well he should have. Even given it was a pawn shop.

Yeah, and the guy they had in to authenticate and price the ball probably had no idea what he was talking about...

NOT!

Thats right. I'm bringing back 'not'.

ha thats awesome! did they get $1000 bucks for the cocktail like the guy who restored it said they would? Were they cool dudes? I kinda feel like they could be dicks in real life...they must get bombarded with people visiting and requesting pics.

nothing is more funny then when they have someone come in to appraise something and its like "this could fetch 1000 in todays market"

Pawnstars: ok so how much do you want for it
Customer: "well its worth 1000" (when they came in thinking to get 300 cause they didnt know shit about it)
Pawnstars:"ill give you 300"
Customer: "900, I know its worth a lot more than 300"

Jesus... people will watch just about anything. I can't stand the "tattoo" shows... so I am guessing I'd probably be bored with a pawn shop show in about all of 5 minutes.

EDIT: To each his/her own. I'd never heard of a pawn shop show before though.

It is what it is - its a tv show for entertainment purposes... if thats not your cup of tea - dont watch it. Kind of like watching fishing shows for me - no interest at all - but somebody else might plunk down with a beer and watch hours of it and be enteretained. I find the Pawn Stars show very interesting because you NEVER know what people will bring in. The guys were all very nice and down to earth. Chum is the same in person as on tv... kind of talked to each one about thier qwirkyness... it was fun.

How much did they offer?

When were the signatures placed? Where did it come from? What other signatures were on there?

Joey D and the Mick did the autograph circuit for years.

Also, it's tough with those old balls.... Because the clubhouses used assistants to sign stuff when the Mick was too hung over and Joey D was being a pain in the ass.

Dimaggio was on the sweet spot, but the ball was worn as hell. Since it was so early in his career too, Mantle's siggy was his first one (which looks lame compared to his second, with the cool looking M's).

Oh well.

I like that one....

But it was his and not the clubhouse attendant one?

My dad had a clubhouse attendant one.

That's the thing, who knows? Some "expert" came in and claimed it to be authentic, but you never know. I'm sure that was part of not offering a shit ton of money for it.
