I have a Star Castle and Ripoff machine, each with decent side art and the usual chips and dings along the edges.

The main problem is that there is no repro sideart for these cabs, and I've never seen NOS art for sale either. I'm assuming this is the best art I'll get.

Both cabs are crappy particle board covered with a thin vinyl/laminate. I'd love to strip the sides down to board and re-laminate, but then I'd lose the art.

So two questions:

1) How to fix the chipped laminate ... Just use bondo and paint? The RipOff cab has textured laminate, so a bondo/paint solution wouldn't match. the SC is smooth, so that could work.

2) there are some gouges in the side art stickers, but it seems like it could be "fixed" by relaxing the torn sticker and laying it flat again. Has anyone tried this? would a heat gun help?

Thanks in advance for your help. I think I'm only collecting plywood cabs with stenciled art from now on :)

If you can hold off for a bit, side art repro for Star Castle should be available soon-ish.

Cannot say the same for Rip-Off, unfortunately.

Mask off the side art with blue painters tape. Use an xacto knife to trim tape to shape. Do your repair work and patch in a new piece of vinyl when done. You can get this from rich at thisoldgame or from brian jones of gamestencils. I did a panel replacement, so I didn't have to patch something in the middle of the cab, but with care it could be done.

Clean and rough up the existing vinyl a little with steel wool or a scrubby, then hit the entire thing with black or white, in two or three very light coats. Allow to dry and peel tape. Done.

Yeah, I've been looking forward to the Star Castle repros, but I figure it's a while off... I don't think the scans have been vectorized and sent to Richard (TOG) yet, and it's not on his upcoming list of projects. Not complaining, just observing :)

I bought a SC CPO repro from Richard, and it's very nice.

as for the ripoff side art, archer m. repro-d it and sold out of it years ago, last set of NOS side art i have seen was purchased by roadrunner, that is if i remember correctly & it was very expensive.

would love to see someone repro that ripoff side art, i would buy 2-3 sets.

i don't know how you could match that textured vinyl that cinematronics used on the ripoff cabs.
