Parting out games, at what point does it become acceptable?

I know this is 100% subjective but at what point does the community accept this as an appropriate action?
I feel that most of the opinions are based off of perceived value of game and not strictly just because it is an arcade game.
Example one:
Ms. Pacman
Complete water damaged and or cabinet falling apart.
Most people would say scrap and donate
Example two:
Sundance
Complete water damaged and or cabinet falling apart.
Most people would say to replace as much of the cabinet and spare no expense to
get this game back to restored condition.

I also feel that there are instances people would be okay to scrap fully working machines because they are not worth a whole lot of money. Or they don't have a sentimental attachment with them like playing them in an arcade in their youth. For instance dynamo conversion cabinet with nice 25 monitor.

I would say that what anyone does with their cabinet is up to them. I almost trashed a cab one time, but I gave it away. Thank god I did because while he did mame it, it looks brand new.

My understanding from perusing Craigslist and eBay is that once there's an x-in-1 board in someone's hands, they possess the God-given right to do whatever they want with any cabinet they want and ain't nobody gonna tell them no different.

Apparently it becomes acceptable when you have a complete cabinet that turns on to a blank screen and don't want to bother fixing it, when it might just be a power supply....

Who are you referencing? ;)

I would have parted out almost every game I've owned if I took that approach. LOL

Every game is fixable...with enough time, patience, and monies.

Certainly not any Popeye owners, or friends of Popeye owners.

i recently converted my Major Havoc to a 60-n-1 because the original game was just weird and boring.

now i can play Frogger AND Donkey Kong on the same arcade

you gotta do what you gotta do

Unless the game looks like this, don't part it out...

I come across hundreds of cabs and the only time I part them out is if they are in a generic cab, or if they look like the one below, which luckily isn't too often. Although people have the right to do whatever they want to their games, this is not the place to part out an undamaged complete game without getting flamed for it.

And doesn't bother giving a price or desire to sell it as a whole after replying and PM'ing.

I don't think that dude has a popeye...

Parting a game out is a huge PITA

Unless it's your full time business it's hardly worth the effort imo

same concept as "at what point is it acceptable to bang your cousin"?

answer will vary depending on your background and location and how big a f*ckwit you are.

when it's 3:31am

and you've been drinking miller lites all day shirtless down by the river.

and even though you stopped huffing a mixture of kerosene and Fabreze out of a Pic-n-Save plastic bag an hour ago, you can still feel the gov't tuning into your tooth fillings to read your mind.

in that frame of mind ... when you see Darleene across the way, fighting a chained-up pitbull for a dirty burger patty on the ground ... anything can happen ...

were we talking about arcade games?

I hate to see it but, ultimately, people are free to do what they want with their own property.

It pains me to see a survivor (like Popeye) get parted though. Rarity is becoming more and more of a factor. I can't help but thinking people know not what they do. Some people will pay a premium for a true survivor, ya know.

I have to say that's an excellent control setup and perfect implementation of an LCD screen

My personal rule of thumb?

If it's very common, while it's always preferable to try to salvage even extremely damaged games, if it's not worth the expense or effort to you then yes part it out, I don't consider it any great sin.

It it's incredibly rare and valuable like Sundance? Move heaven and earth to save it, and if you don't feel up to restoring it yourself find someone who will. I can almost guarantee you that no matter what kind of shape it's in, if all or most of the parts are still there SOMEONE will want to save it, you probably would even find someone willing to pay you to ship it freight.
