Parting out a Tempest upright!

If it was anywhere near Boise I would buy it. The fact is, on a site dedicated to preserving classics, I shouldn't have to. That seems lost on so many of you here. He can do what he wants with it, it is his game. But if he is going to part out a game with a decent cabinet, on a site dedicated to preserving classics, then he deserves to hear about it.

Hmm... I see "KLOV - KILLER LIST OF VIDEO GAMES" at the top of my screen... right next to INTERNATIONAL ARCADE MUSEUM. Nowhere do I see VAPS... VAPS is a different site run by the same guy.

...so these forums aren't really "preservation" specific if you get right down to it.

EDIT: PS - I certainly don't condone parting out this Tempest... just pointing out the blatantly obvious...

I thought Tempests were for restoring and Space Duels were for harvesting :)

I just spent $250 on a 6100 plus the parts for the monitor rebuild to save a Space Dual. It was so nice, I could not do it. I bought it complete - monitor. It is a hole money wise but I wanted one.

You can say it's a free country and people can do what they want with their games, you can say it's not a preservation specific site ( even it's linked to VAPS and vice versa), you can try and say that X amount of Tempests will be saved because of this game being parted, but none of that takes away from the fact that it's completely fucking retarded to part out a decent game just to have a spare monitor in case your currently working one dies. I have seen games parted because they could not sell, or were all ready missing a part, or had a cabinet that was damaged, but this is one of the dumbest part outs i have yet to see on Klov.

...hard to argue.

Wow, you're close to becoming a Mark Spaeth clone around here! The truth is, not that it's any of your damn business, that I have tried to sell it w/o success. And, technically, the cabinet is damaged since it fell off of a truck. No game is gonna be the same after something like that happens.

See? I actually have legit reasons of parting this game out besides a spare monitor! Happy now?!

I realize that Space Duels are more plentiful and less popular and that's why they get parted out for the monitors. However, I don't feel that the game is all that much inferior to even Tempest. Space Duel is a beautiful design, from the game play , to the graphics, to the cabinet/art. Fortunately, I found a minty one, but I think that anyone who appreciates vector games should own one. Great to hear that you saved a SD.

If everybody saved every machine, there would be no parts for you all to fix your machines with.

I do agree that some games are so trashed that there is nothing left to do but part them.. but no one in this thread has made the claim that 'every' machine must be saved.

Overall I think your statement above is too broad:

1. There are plenty of places/people that sell reproduction parts.

2. There are still LOTS of parts out there from machines that were converted 'back in the day'. Tempest was not a reliable machine on route, and I have seen plenty in warehouses that were converted in the late 80s/early 90s. A good number of those parts are still out there, and some of the old parts you see for sale today came from pack rat operators who didn't throw away their parts after conversions.

3. Just because this machine is parted, it doesn't mean that the parts will be used to fix ANY Tempest machines--that's an (optimistic?) assumption. What if everyone who buys parts from this Tempest is just buying them for spare parts? :) Heck, I know plenty of people who will buy parts because they *might* get a certain machine *someday*. Who knows, someone might be itching to buy that spinner for a MAME project. heh heh..

Ultimately at the end of the day here, we are guaranteed one less Tempest, and a pile of parts that *might* get used. This can be spun either way..

You are the one that said the cabinet was decent.

Really ?

It makes me sick when I drive 15 hours round trip and then countless more to restore a game that was probably in worse shape than yours only to see you part one out for a spare fucking monitor.

Stop being a hack and learn how to fix things instead of destroy them

Blaa Blaa Blaa.
Same old crap.
If someone wants to part a game for what ever reason there is nothing you can do.

Post some pictures of the cabinet, maybe it can be passed along to someone with the know how to save it. Maybe its totally trashed and cant be saved?? Tempest is one of the best classic vectors. I love mine. It would be great to see this saved, and not scrapped!! You dont need a backup monitor, if your other monitor dies they are not hard to fix. There are plenty of people here that would help with repairs if needed. JMO!

Do what you will, its your machine. It just seems like a waste not to try and save it, if it can be saved!! I know 3 people who are looking for a Tempest, and have been for a long time!!

One of my favorite machines, I will never sell mine!!

Don't burn the cab!

Dan, if you do part this out please don't burn/destroy the cab! I will give it a home, I just need someone to get it to Western Mass, or better yet the Albany NY area.

Part of preserving classics requires you to replace parts. He is helping others preserve their classics. He might end up help save 4 or 5 games by parting out this single game. Collateral damage.

His original post says the cabinet is in decent shape, so yeah. Parting out a great game so you can have spares = ultra lame.

As I posted earlier in the thread, the cab is in decent shape until he gets ripped for parting a decent game, then it all of a sudden falls off a truck and becomes "frail." Ultra lame indeed.
