I just bought a paperboy from a fellow klov'er. The sound isnt working. I beleive when you first plug in it makes a ding? But during gameplay It doesnt make any sounds. Where do I start and what to check? game seems to play fine. Except tires have a blue square around them and when you hit a mailbox the money amount has a blue box around it. Cap kit?

What does the self test say?

Pay attention to the Yamaha Test, L POKEY Test, R POKEY Test, and Speech Test. Not having sounds point to the sound effects POKEY generator circuitry.

The blue boxes - is likely a sprite issue. (cap kit will not fix) It is probably a failing chip. See if the self test shows any issues.

The self tests are fairly extensive for the game. Grab the manual and walk through them.

Alright, I've checked all voltages and reseated all the roms. Still no sound except when you first power on it dongs once in a while. Reseating the rooms did clear video tire glitch. When I went into test mode , sound test no sounds came out. Any Ideas? Could this be the sound or music rooms that need burned or replaced. If so where do I get?

check out the sticky thread at the top of this repair section of the forum.

my guess is channelmanic probably fixes atari boards, maybe a couple of other guys.

Sound comes from a pokey or two and a yamaha chip. I would start by looking there.
Can you swap a pokey from another working game?

What other games would work. I have a asteroids and a punch out! Besides pines. Would any of those work and which chips are they?

Well, I ordered and rebuilt the ar III board. I reinstalled correctly and when I turned on game, I have no picture and sound? WTF!!! It played fine but had no sound. Does the ar III board control anything besides sound? Any suggestions? I looked at the solders and the + and - and all going right direction. Monitor neck glows. the screen has a faint lite but only a little. Help!!!!

Re check ALL connections, ar board, monitor, etc. Check voltages and verify fuses with meter.

Does the ar board only control sound? or control other stuff?

Controls sound AND other stuff.

It is actually called the "Regulator/Audio III" board. Controls (regulates) the voltages going to some of the other boards as well as the audio section.

I'm betting that you don't have +15V getting to the boards.

There are little test pads on the board that you can measure it at. There is also a spot on the A/R board to check it out. See if it's at the CPU and video boards first. If not, see if it's on the ARIII. If so, follow it through the different connectors on the harness.

The +15 controls the sound as well as the video output.
I had an issue where my +15V was really low and the video went dim along with some of the sound missing.
