Hey I am unsure how to proceed and I really dont want to mess this up.

I picked up a paperboy project that was missing the ARIII and power supply. I ordered them from quarterarcade and the ARIII plugged right in simple.

But the power supply connecting isnt going so great. I am trying to put up some pics to show the difference. There is a switching power supply that is getting power to mainboard. The power plug cord comes in and splits with a small Y harness to send power to the switching PS and the light fixture....

It looks like the big blue cap was previously attached to the bottom of the cab.

So I am guessing that I need to disconnect the power in from the Y harness and plug it into the new power block assembly on the side where it looks like it will fit.

But my harness the goes to the ARIII has several purple and orange wires that look like they were all connected to the big blue on each post of the cap.

So I don't know where these go no since my power block has a receptacle to plug the harness into.....

And I am not sure where to connect the monitor power supply since it say it needs power from an isolation transformer.

Can anyone step me through this?

J2

ok so I have found the 110ac flows to the J2 connector but it looks like i am missing a part that would loop it back in to go to the iso.

those do connect to a big blue but not the big blue that is mounted to the power brick. Paperboy uses a 2nd big blue that mounts to the bottom of the cab. Those orange and purple wires connect to the second big blue. Not sure off hand which color goes to which post (- or +) but if you need me to verify I can.

The power for your monitor should be coming off of two of the wires (black and white) of the 15 pin connector on your power brick. That is the connector next to the big blue near the edge of the power supply.

Wow,,,,ok that would be great. Do you think it would be the same as the power brick? The oranges all go to + there.

Any idea about the connector at the J2 spot?

I just checked and orange go to + and purple go to - .

As for j2 I'll probably need to get a pic to make the description clear but it's a connector with two wires (black and white) that loop back into the connector.

thanks for all information I really appreciate it.

I think I know what you mean on the loop back connector I guess I just need to figure out which one goes where.

I ordered a new big blue cap so when I get it I should be all set!

I was surprised find that none of my other three games had a big blue I could borrow :(

I thought there would be one in the centipede mini but it has the switching PS.

Could I manually run 5v to the purple/orange wires to provide power here?

Thanks again for the help and for the schematic!

Another klover and myself was discussing PB power one other time.. Why can't you use a switching power supply and 2 different transformers for the odd voltages (forget what they are top of my head). The transformers at the time of discussion were on ebay cheap for new ones. Just a thought.

that is kind of what I was thinking but I don't know that much about this stuff.

If the job of the big blue is to smoothly provide 5v,

then why can't I allow the power brick to support the other voltages and route 5v from a swicthing ps to the orange and purple harness?

You don't get +5V out of the power brick or the second big blue capacitor. +5V is created on the A/R III board and on the auxiliary switcher that is used for the CPU +5V.

The DC voltage that comes out of the power brick should be +10.3 V DC. This will be on the orange and purple wires. This voltage feeds the A/R III, which uses it to produce regulated +5V.

thanks for letting me know. I have ordered a second big blue and I will just wait for it to arrive.

thanks!

It looks like the AC comes in on the Blue and Brown wires to that J2. They need to be connected to the Black and White wire at the J2.....

Does it matter which way?

I mean should blue go to white and brown go to black or vice versa?

thanks!

Paperboy rides again! Thanks everyone for all the help!

it was blue to white,,,,,and brown to black

thanks!

You can definitely replace the AR III. If you do this you just run off a switcher. The main differences are that you need to change some wiring and you need an amp board for the sound. Remember the AR III is both a power and audio amp board so you still need an amp for the sound. My super sprint, 720 and a couple of my system 1 cabs use the switcher and small amp board instead of the AR III. My paperboy and 2 of my system 1 cabs use the ARIII.
