Paperboy goes dim sometimes - need to turn the brightness or screen back up.

Not really sure which monitor I have in my Paperboy but I am having some minor issues with the monitor...

This has happened twice. I turn my games on and Paperboy's monitor is very dark. The image is barely noticeable. So, I pull it out, and readjust the screen or the brightness and then it is back to normal. Also, if I turn up the screen too much the monitor shuts down. HV shutdown? After I adjust it, it's perfect. Looks great.

Is the flyback going? B+ issue? Any ideas? What types of medium-res monitors are typically in this bad boy? Common problem?

It sounds to me like the flyback is going out. I think they normally came with a WG K4915 med res monitor. Check with Chad at the Arcade Cup for replacement flybacks and any experience he has had with these symptoms.

Of course, it could be as simple as a cap kit as well...

Sounds like a weak flyback to me also. I would do a cap kit first, because you never know. It would be more cost effective to buy a cap kit and have it solve the problem rather than buy a $$$ flyback and have that not be your problem. It cant hurt.

Looks like the monitor had a cap kit not to long ago. So, must be the fly.

Thanks guys! I'll look into which monitor I have based on Dokert's monitor choices and order a fly from AS.

Ok, had to throw that out before I posted my info, just in case you were around.

I had this same thing happen on a K7000 med-res I did in a Paperboy. Turns out one of the wires (red or white) going to the little board-type thing mounted on the left wall above the flyback was breaking loose. Pulled it off, cut off the strands, restripped and tinned, and resoldered it. No more brightness issues...

Now aren't you glad that I mentioned the 7000?

He didn't order the fly yet anyway, because Arcadecup is currently the only place that sells the fly for the 4900.

Well, hope he sees this before ordering a flyback fro AS if he does have a K7000. While it's possibly a flyback issue, I only came across this fix because I had already replaced the flyback and still had an issue.

That wire sometimes breaks loose, especially if you pull and put back the chassis often during troubleshooting...

I am not sure what monitor this is. Do you guys know?

Looks like original caps. Maybe that's my only issue?

It appears to be an Atari Disco AGM-20M. It seems to be original, it has an Atari part number on it.

BlkDog7 - I have that exact same monitor in my 1984 Paperboy which I am trying to troubleshoot. Did you get a cap kit for it? If so is it the standard AGM-M20 cap kit?

Mine doesn't power on at all, no hum, buzz, picture nothing.
