So, I have been converting a Championship Sprint to a Paperboy and I have all the parts now. The only thing that is confusing me is the control panel wiring. I was able to get a Paperboy control panel wiring harness that feeds into P106 and P102 and then leads to the large molex connector that plugs directly into the Paperboy control panel.

The only controls that work are the left and right buttons. No movement or speed up/slow down. The wiring is still attached from the gas pedals to the PCB from Championship Sprint. In test mode, there is movement on the values but it doesn't look like its affected by moving the controls. Just automatically fluctuating.

There is also a small one-wire connector that comes off the Paperboy control panel wiring harness near the large molex connector and I have no idea where it goes.

Can someone help me with this or possible post pics of their setup and where the small one-wire connector goes? Thank you for the help. I will try to post pics later today.

I figured this out for mine a long time ago, but I am not 100% how. Your problem is the pots vs optics. They use different connectors on the board.
Essentially the gas pedals would control payperboy movement.

someone asked about this maybe 2 years ago and I posted pics of what I did (I spliced in a 2nd connector). MAybe I can find the pics.

Pics would be great if you have them. I thought it would be plug and play with the Paperboy harness adaptor but it appears not. I see from the schematic the pinouts look to be right with the adaptor I got but I'll have to check the molex connections a little closer. I'd like to see how you did it though.

I can't find the pics, so I would have to retake them and that would be a major hassle right now. I think I might have also moved a pin on the paperboy side of the molex. Then it was just hack the right wires to lower connector.

Probably smarter to just make an exact copy of the paperboy to pcb harness and add that to the cab. Maybe if you contact dokert, he would be willing to make a few.

I wish someone would make a multi kit for system 2. It would be cool to play CS, SS, PB, & APB in the same cab.

........a little off topic, but curious - are the tracks any different between CS and SS?

I own a Super Sprint, love it. One of my favorites - just thinking how it could be possible to add more track variations :)

WooHoo!

Well, a multi Sys 2 kit would be great, for sure.

Now, someone sent me a paperboy control panel harness that plugs into the pcb so, I think that should be all I need? When you say hack the right wires to the lower connector, are you talking about the gas pedal connector? Shouldn't I be able to just unplug that altogether and not worry about that connector if I have the paperboy control panel harness?

you think that you are confused...look here...this guy put his in backwards, maybe he is trying to start a trend. I did not use the post with his name for a reason, he is very very touchy about this and doesn't want us busting his chops.

your paperboy CP is probably just wires up to the molex. the problem is the wires after the molex are for CS.

CS uses pots for gas pedals. Paperboy uses the same pot connection for steering. The CS wires are not going to the right connector as the CS wires are going to optical connections. Thats why it does not work.

No-

He has the correct harness piece that goes from the CP molex connector to the PCB headers. (I sold it to him)

Championship Sprint uses connector P103 for steering (optical) inputs.
It uses P106 for button inputs
It uses P102 for pot inputs (gas pedals)

Paperboy uses P106 for the button (throw/start) inputs.
It uses P102 for the left/right/pedal/brake inputs (pots)

These connectors are keyed and can't be misplaced easily. You would wind up with an open pin on the header if you had it shifted wrong.

I say to double-check the connections. You can use a ohmmeter on the CP while disconnected to confirm that the pots vary from 0 to 5K (I think).

The pedals currently shouldn't be connected to the PCB at all, but if they are, they're taking up one of the headers where the CP should be connected. If the pedals ARE connected to the PCB, then they will control the left/right/pedal/brake.

Double-check.

Kerry

I've got something weird going on and I'm afraid it might be on the pcb. I definitely have everything hooked up correctly now. I just don't have left/right up/down controls at all. Even with paperboy running with the gas pedals hooked up, I don't have any control with the pedals. Same with the paperboy control panel hooked up.

I will check the wiring continuity also but I'm beginning to think it's the pcb.

Do you have a CS pcb? if so does it work with pedals?

Put the game in test, go to the calibrate control screen. Reset the controls(press both buttons) and see if moving the controller changes the values.

connect the gas pedals to your paperboy pcb and see if they change the value of the test screen.

I got this sorted out finally. I swapped chips from my Paperboy over to CS and the controls now work. Looks like a pcb issue after all. I made a mistake when swapping chips over and put the slapstick in backwards...oops. Got all kinds of garbage on the screen. Luckily when I turned it back around, everything still worked. Probably got lucky. Sheesh! Now, on to the restore! Thanks for your help and to Kerry for the harness to get this sucker going. In fact, just played my first game of Paperboy on the real machine in who knows how long? 25-30 years?
