Paperboy Bubble?

I have a Champ Sprint but would never convert it, I just plain never likes Paperboy. It was hard and annoying. Just like 720, that game was really not very fun. It is indeed crazy what the sales value is for some of these old things.

Paperboy can be played on Mame and Xbox Live and the controllers on Xbox is better then the Arcade.

Ummm, no.

I still have the Paperboy XBL Arcade game, and it sucks playing on the XBOX controller. Handlebars are the only way to go, and its not close.

I didn't say anything about gameplay. It's about the experience and novelty of using unique controls.

I completely agree with your assessment. I'd only play it with the original controls.

I myself have only been buying games for years that I can't play with the proper controls in MAME (Spy Hunter, Star Wars, Super Sprint, Road Blasters, etc).

You can play all of them with PC game controllers, the keyboard, mouse, etc...I have no interest in that.

Lunar Lander, Paperboy, 720, Major Havoc - all really cool unique games and are highly collectible because they are unique, not because of game play...

Same here, the controls are a big part of it. I have no interest in playing this with a controller on an emulator, it's just not the same. I also love the game personally, played it a ton as a kid and it's very unique. I'm keeping mine :)

Lets not forget the inflation of value caused by people with a "Meeee Tooooo!!!" mentality. We all know the guy who has stuff that is basically his version of the "Big Penis".

"I've got Major Havok #0002, it has 38 plays on it! Ain't it cool? I can't say what I paid for it."
Translation: "See what I have that you don't, and know that I don't even play it because I don't really care for it. I just want people to admire my game, and through it, admire me."

So now the other guy has to begin a search for MH #0001..... and the quest for the Big Penis continues......

I am much more impressed by the guy (or gal) with the beat up Defender who can get a million.

Guy, I feel hurt now. Then what does my Maserati say about me? Wahhhhhhhhhhhh

That being said, this is a hobby that has fundamental differences from other collecting hobbies.

Collectors who use their collections, modify them, improve them and otherwise treat them as interactive.

Very different from collectors of crystal sculptures, porcelain dolls, and stamps.

Sometimes we even create a new old object from scratch! Imagine doing that with a dynasty vase. How much value would it have compared to the original?

A repro DK has a much closer (or even higher) sale price versus an original.

IF and only IF the controller works properly... I have only played in the wild (Reno Peppermill, Grinkers, Pinball Hall of Fame) and the controller always sucks... It always seems to be the LEFT/RIGHT that doesn't work... Slow and fast is always good...

I can get a million on my beat-up Defender!

And I sold my spare Defender with a silver coin door (mine is black Coin Controls) because I don't care about that crap. It's still a Defender!

Word.

The controller on this game can be a huge pain in the ass to keep working properly, even after a rebuild. Sometimes it seems like it has something to do with game settings being corrupted and a reset can help.

The controls are definitely a mystery. No disrespect at all to Steve, but the controller at Grinkers was jacked up, even after replacing the pots. Torin brought in his beautifully restored controls and that helped a ton, but the game would still pull to the left randomly. It's bizarre.

Luckily, the controls on my personal machine have been pretty solid.

I had a project Paperboy and a project CS.

I restored the Paperboy, replacing all inner and outer vinyl, NOS handle bars and grips, all rebuild pieces, had some pieces replated. Absolute restoration with the screened artwork, etc. I sold it.

I sold a spare cp years ago..wish I still had it.

I do still have the Championship Sprint, with an NOS marquee, but my few boardsets don't work. Still haven't gotten around to it.

The welding on the base of the controllers seems to be crap and prone to break which could lead to this problem. Could also be a calibration issue with the Pokey kinda like Star Wars.

When I restored mine, I had to have that (I assume same one) weld re-welded as it had broken.

I'd like to toss my penis into the ring if I could. I picked up a solid, working (but painted black) Paperboy back in 2007 for $250. Restored it to the best of my ability with what resources were available at the time (New white and black vinyl, I spearheaded the System 1 side art repro, and there was no repro CPO back then). After I restored it, I turned around and sold it for $575. Back then I didn't want to 'take' anybody. I figured I only had about $200 invested into the restoration + the $250 I originally paid, so I was making $125 for my work and effort, which at the time seemed more than fair. What a moron I was.
