alright. so I think Bongoben might have posted about this earlier, but his thread is about his whole resto, so Ill start another.

My power supply (ARIII) has a resistor that is getting so-so hot. its hot enough to de-solder it out of place. Its located at R25. Ive just replaced the one that was there before since the previous one had been burnt up but...

In the pic, notice the brown burn marks behind the resistor. thats from the previous one. i replaced it and powered the game one. it comes to life, but that resistor gets SO hot. its going to burn itself up again in no time. seeing that others have had this fail point on their power supplies, anyone have any advice as to what all the heat is coming from?

If i needed to replace the 2N3055 thingy in the middle of the board, where could I find something like that?

Surprisingly, Radio Shack actually carries them in stores. Probably a little overpriced, but convenient and no shipping.

honestly, I wouldnt mind just swapping this ARIII out for a switching power supply if possible. Has anyone ever done this? is it difficult? I just dont know what wire goes to where.

to permanantly swap a switcher in there, do I just replace all the wires going to the video board from the ARIII that read 5 volts to the switcher? there are like 5 in that connector that read +5 volts. the ARIII is only supplying the video board with less than 5 volts of power so it needs it anyway.

My Pappaerboy has a 110v fan that blows up on the power supply....

Yeah, my restoration is going very very slowly. A lot of stuff came up so it's been hard to find the time. Almost done with the bondo and sanding work. Anyways, I picked up the AR-III rebuild kit from Bob Roberts and also grabbed a few of those capacitors that you are indicating as those were not included in the kit. I can't recall the website I ordered mine from. I am assuming that my issues were due, in part, to the power supply needing to be rebuilt (I also picked up this kit from Bob Roberts) as when I was metering the power it was extremely high all over the place. I would double check that your voltages are correct from the power supply because if you're getting spikes in voltages on the AR-III that could be caused by something needing to be replaced on the power supply. I haven't rebuilt either components yet although I'm hoping to get back onto working on my cab sometime this week.

if you don't have the previously mentioned fan blowing on this thing, you will definately have some problems with the ARIII

That's the other thing I noticed on my cab before I tore it apart. The fan is/was installed but it wasn't functioning. I didn't think about it before but this probably has a direct relation to the AR-III burning up in addition to my power level issues.

Eventually Atari did this with their system 2 hardware. :)

If you add a switcher, you will also need to add in an Atari Assy Audio Board, which you see in a lot of Atari titles from that era that used switchers. You could always just amplify the sound some other way--I've seen plenty of system 2 cabs with random amplifiers wired in.

if I knew how to wire a new amp in there with a switcher I would.

yea. so before I installed all new caps for the ARIII, I was gettign a reading of 3 volts or less going to the video pcb. after the swap, im still getting only 3. no change at all. The resistor at R25 isnt getting as hot anymore though, still warmer than the others... wtf guys.

alright. so before swapping the caps I had the game making test sounds. but after nothing. I am getting 5 volts to the video pcb now as I hooked up a switcher to it. the yellow wire is only reading 5 too though? shouldnt that read 12?
