I ran across a guide sheet for restoring backglasses that talks about using oil based printing inks. In particular PANTONE which I believe is due to the fact that they have a color matching system or color wheels which give specific formulas for mixing inks to achive that color.

I am curious if anyone out there has tried or uses this procedure.

Heres the link, its on flippers.com but I found it thru a Mr Pinball Tip.

Its use is for the older reverse printed (painted) backglass. Most of my games are from the late 40's to 78. I'm not much on Solid State games. Decent backglasses for these games are becoming harder and very expensive. All of the BG are sealed with Triple Coat but a few have minor flaking and I would like to improve. I have a few dups that I can pratice on, just want to see if anyone else had tried or had tips on using the inks.

wow thats too much to read for me with no pics : (
basically they are referrering to a pantone book the is kinda a formula guidline if you dont know how to mix and match colors. pretty basic gives you %s of base colors to help make colors

the ink colors they refer are base ink colors and would vary from mfg to mfg
example the most well known enamel screen ink would be Nazdar and does come in the colors they spec but would need to be reduced with a thinner since they are screen inks
would be kinda expensive to go that route unless like pointed out in there site you know of a local printer that would have that on hand that would sell you smaller amounts
typically they come in qts and run around $30each depending on color
and a pantone book for that really isnt nessasry-IMO

The cheaper/easier route would be enamel model paints
same principal for matching colors yellow and blue make green
adding white or black to lighten or darken

though the biggest problem with touching up backglass is any illuminated spots would most likely show brush strokes
unless you airbrushed those touchups

Yeah I see what you are saying....I have already gotten some 5lb cans of Pantone base colors off of Ebay at $6.00 a can (5lbs will go a long way) and I'll probally skip the color formula and just mix for color by eye. Can I thin the inks with regular acetone?? and shot with a airbrush????? I like the idea of using the inks for the transparency......the colors that don't need to be lit I can back coat with gray enamel.

what brand and type/series of inks are they?
they can be thinned for spraying LMK what they are and can confimr best reducer
