Hey all,

I have a Konami Racing Jam cab that I am wanting to paint over and freshen up. It has a black layered coating of something I am not sure what it is exactly. FWIW it looks to be the same material as what is on the sides of my Ms. Pac/ Galaga Reunion cab. Can I sand it to roughen it up and then prime and paint it? Or will it just end up peeling off once it dries? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Typically these games will have a melamine laminate on them. It can be sanded off or removed with a heat gun...provided you have particleboard underneath. I've done that with the inner portion of my Discs of Tron. However, for my regular Tron, I just roughened it up and painted over it. It hasn't peeled yet, but I'm sure that if I took my fingernail to it, I could dig it. I've got the same issue with my Journey right now, except I really don't have a choice this time. Unlike DOT and Tron, the sides of Journey are made of MDF and no particleboard, so if I heat up the melamine, I'm sure I'll just be peeling off sheets of MDF. So I'm just going to roughed it up well with some 150 or 220 grit, prime it, and then paint it.
