Just curious, has anyone here had any luck doing Bondo work and repainting while still preserving original side art? Or does that always come out looking cheesy in the end and you're better off redoing everything from scratch?

I've got a Monaco GP mini which has its side art mostly intact but the rest of it is loaded with gouges and such thus needing significant work, and for what I can tell nobody is selling replacement artwork for this game. What it does have going for it is that the side art profile is pretty much entirely straight so taping should be easy.

Check out some of Phet's restos, IIRC he masked the side art and repainted a couple. (R-Type?)

Good evening - I just got done doing the same thing to my Kozmik Krooz'r cabinet. The cabinet needed a lot of epoxy fills but the sideart was in amazing condition. I used blue tape and laid it over the sideart overlapping it so that half of the tape was on the art and the other half on the paint. From there, I used my finger nail and creased a line in the tape where the edge of the art had a ridge and then came back and hand cut along the ridge crease with an exacto knife. Note, you need to use a very sharp knife and in fact, I replaced mine 2 times for each side art section. Also, it is easier to do it by hand vs. trying to use a straight edge (even for the straight sections). Take your time and it will turn out perfect. From there, remove the excess tape and you are left with a razor straight edge along the perimeter of the side art. Next step is to mask off the center of the art using paper and tape. Make sure to press down the tape before painting. This method allowed me to make my repairs and paint the game with no damage to the art. Also, spray do not roll the paint. This will give you a perfect line with no bleeding. Also I let the paint cure for one day before removing the tape. Additionally, before I removed the tape I one again cut along the edge with an exacto knife to ensure that I did not have any tears in the paint. Once I was done you could not tell that the game had been "repainted". FYI, as a reference point I sprayed an oil based satin enamel. Hope this helps.
