Anyone have hints/tips for this? I'll be using a roller (I know I know) but the veneer of the cab is where I have questions...I suppose I should sand it first to get a good base for the paint to adhere to? Thanks for any suggestions!

Nothing wrong with using a roller. You can actually use a product called Binn primer that doesn't require any prepping. Roll it on thin - dries under 15 minutes. Keep applying until all is covered. Give it a light sanding. Painting by roller requires VERY light amounts of paint. I typically end up rolling a cab 4 times.

I've done two DK cabinets so far and both times I've rolled the paint on. I've been using Behr paint from Home Depot and it's turned out great for me. I have pics on my website if you need a visual reference.

This is my process in a nutshell:

1. Remove monitor, PCB, power supply, wiring harness, control panel, coin door, coin box, brackets, marquee, bezel.
2. Remove any stickers/old sideart/residue
3. Light sand
4. Bondo any gashes, holes, damaged corners/edges, etc. Let harden over night
5. Sand, sand, sand
6. Wipe clean
7. Tape off sides of front panels
8. Paint inner black areas, back, back door, and top. Let dry over night
9. Remove tape and tape off inner black areas
10. Apply single coat on front and side panels, let dry, repeat 3-4X
11. Light sand with sanding wool on front and side panels

I hope this helps.

Great info thanks!

So, couple questions...

Paint...What did you use and whick paint codes did you find worked best? I generally use high density foam rollers and a little paint thinner...Is that what you use?

Sanding...DId you use steel wool for all sanding? If so, what kind?

Thanks again!

Like I said, I use Behr paint from Home Depot. It's the only brand I've used and I've been happy with it. I use high density foam rollers, but I don't use thinner. I know some guys use thinner when they use a spray gun.

I use 80 grit paper to do the initial sanding. Then 120 grit paper following that. After I've applied my multiple layers of paint, I use 000 steel wool to create a finish. Just a light sand. Then wipe it clean when I'm done.

Was wondering about the actual paint code for DK 'blue'...Where did you find that?

The CP inner supports were used to match this. It was amazing to see the paint shade difference from the support piece to the outside of the cabinet. Paint fade was unreal.
The lighting makes it look darker than it really is ... compare it to the flash on:

And for the record Behr paint doesn't come in a satin sheen only semi gloss. Satin is closer to the real deal.

My wife is a graphic designer and she basically eye-balled an inner CP sample to a color swatch that they had. I forget what the exact color name was, but that's how I did it.

If you're a stickler for EXACT color and feel, go with Deadly's advice. IMO, Behr color and semigloss turned out fine for me and I don't think it really makes that much of a difference to the average person who plays/sees my games. It came out strong, smooth, and pretty. No roller marks or anything like that.
