painted the tron today!! WHOOHOO "wtfbbqhomoimhighonpaintfumes"

lol...

heh yep, FINALLY got some colr on old tron.

This is the one that was basically un-savable to most folks(including myself)
I decided that it was worth a shot and the effort has paid off.

I had to totally replace the bottom and about 12" of each side. I bondoed it and got that done earlier today..

I had a day off of work today.. we have a paintbooth/paint area there where in-house paintjobs USED to be done...(painter was family and a drunk, they finally had enough, thats a whole other story)...

so i figured today was the day to break in my $9 pearl harbor frieght hvlp spray gun...

I was going to originally try that duplicolor paint shop paint on this, but im cheap lol.
In this former paintshop at work theres tons and tons(prolly 50+ gallons) of leftovers and unused paints sitting around... most of which is still fine.....

SO i mixed up the 1/4 gallon of black paint i found over in the old body shop(american finishes duracryl-cheap line of ppg) with some napa reducer i found, filled up the gun, and hoped for the best.

SO far, so good. No fisheyes, no runs. The paint sprayed great! It looks pretty damn good. It has a nice shine to it but its not overgloss thankfully, i think full on smooth wouldnt look good on these cabe...

THis is automotive grade acrylic paint(single stage-no clear coat) so if i want it even shinier i couild wetsand and buff it, but i think i will leave it as is, as it looks pretty effing good!

the only bummer is that this is gloss black paint, so it shows almost all the bondo i put on the cab but oh well.. Im happy.. im finally getting this bastard done!

ill post pics soon!

So is this a recommendation of the harbor freight hvlp spray gun? I am going to be looking for one when it comes time to do my Pac Man, and $9 vs. $79 from the big box store is a consideration.

P.S. Can't wait for the Tron pics, I have almost talked myself into getting one.

any large dots are form the camera and in the last pic the streak mark is just a finger smudge... has to smudge it to make sure the paint was dry before i moved it this afternoon, i figured under the art is a good place for testing that lol

The best part about this cab is once i let this paint harden a few days i can wax it if i want lol

I practiced somewhat on some cardboard untill i got the spray pattern i wanted... i WAS ABLE TO PUT ON 3 COATS WITHIN 30 MINS... first was light and then 2 nice medium-heavy coats.

YES the gun worked just as well as a high end one would( i guess), i had nice control of the paint/air while doing this(trigger pull controls the paint putput very nicely), it sprayed nice, worked just fine for me.. Remember to flush it with the reducer your going to use first to get any oils/contaminents/chinamen residue (lol) out of it but yeah man for $9, worked just fine for me... I set it to make a nice fan pattern, that worked out best for this NEWBIE at least...

If this was any other color but gloss black you wouldnt see many flaws(if any) btu of course gloss black is evil in as it looks great but also shows every frickin flaw there is and magnifies the piss out of it...

Ummmm...why did you have to do that?

You probably should have put a coat of primer on the cab before the black paint. It would have helped to cover the bondo.

3 coats in 30 minutes???? 0: Goodluck on the paint curing properly!

thats what it calls for dude.. 3 coats, 10 mins between coats...

it is auto body paint.. american finishes duracryl to be exact..

i did primer it but apparently not enough lol..

theres alot more details in the resto showcase...

the smudge wiped off lol no big deal man..

Most urethane paints only require 7-15 min flash time between coats. Depends on the temp of what you are painting, and the type activator you are using.

If you can find a smaller nozzle size for the HF paint gun You might try that next time. I think they come with a 1.5 standard. a 1.3 would have better atomization, thus less orange peel.

+1 on the primer point....

...wouldn't have been able to tell you even used Bondo if you had went with automotive primer and sanding before paint.

Is it the right color black ? Semi , flat, Yours looks Gloss, But what is origional? I have one in primer ready for paint. Any Input. I use a product by Marhide for painting cabs and it maches nice to the Org. Overlay that was put on the cabs, I know this was a painted cab.
and she is ready for my Down Draft Paint Booth. Mine was painted before i got it. Any Input would be appriciated. You did a nice job on the cab with a 9.00 dollar gun. My HVLP Guns cost around 400.00. Sucks to be me. Keep Up The Nice Work!!

originally its probhably supposed to be like a rough semigloss(i believe it was laminated originally)

but gloss black acrylic enamel car paint was free so thats what i used

(american finishes duracryl to be exact)

actually tron original is a matte one sided melamine. The outside of the cab is melamine while the inside is just painted black.

If you were going through all that effort to paint the cab why not remove all that hardware and the coin box bolts?
