Bored and looking for a summer project, I am wondering - would you paint that DK glass, or leave it?

I have very rarely seen a DK cocktail with original tempered glass with black paint. For obvious reasons they have mostly broken and been replaced with clear glass or their paint has decayed since their creation.

So, is it worth it to remove the glass, and carefully paint the underside back to black? This would take a lot of time and careful application plus drying time.

Has anyone done this recently? There was a post about it not too long ago but for a different game. Since DK has that white formica/plastic veneer under the glass it's not so bad as if it were clear all the way through to the monitor.

What mine looks like (not mine but close enough - mine has legs like the one above but the top is identical to this):

Didn't they come in both black and white? The one I temporarily owned was white with the Donkey Kong instruction card.

I have seen so many with the white only that I am no longer sure.

Since I saw a few with the black like in the top picture I assumed they lost their original black glass at some point along the way. Not unusual for any cocktail. The guy who sold me mine, said the glass was broken by him when storing the game. So when I bought a replacement naturally I looked it up and KLOV, which has no inaccuracies in any of the game database posts or pictures*, showed the black glass.

*This assumption was made long before I learned better. The assumption has stuck in my mind, and I kind of like that black glass look but I don't want to hurt my cards or the white underside, both of which are practically mint in condition. Minty Ninty, one might even say.

To tell you the truth, I like 'em better with the white exposed. I added a small image af the upright side art and marquee off to the right to fill the void. I think it gives it a little more "flava" The purists may say its not original. I know, I know, but I like it and they can easily be removed. If you wanted to paint the glass black I would just mask it and spray it then seal it with triple thick much like a pin backglass.

Here's a pic of mine. I was at one time gonna have MAME marquees print up two long strips of the same border thats on the DK bezel (you know the one the shows the ape picking his nose, Pauline and jumpman in various positions) and apply it to the table top edge but my email was never responded to :( As you can see I removed the old woodgrain veneer (I had to rebuild the back half of the frame as it was missing) And yes, I know thats not the original joystick ball top I thought red would also give it a little more flair. It had duct tape balltops on it when I got it LOL.

I think it looks better that way. Too much open space before.

I agree, I think they look way too plain with that big void off to the right, black or white. All of my arcade buddies seem to like it better that way as well. The good thing is it's just an image printed on glossy paper stuck under the glass so if I want I can just pull it out and it's back to normal.

The DK I had was the white top as have all the other DK's I've seen. All of the DK Jr's and Popeye's I've seen have been black.

Mine is also white, only has the left side instruction card, but it has the narrow strip below the monitor on both sides. I think it would have looked better with the big instruction card on both sides, but I've been thinking of coming up with some sort of D2K instuction card and putting it on the space on the right side, since I have D2K in mine. I do like gregatron's extra artwork he put on his, definitely dresses up that plain side.
