I have an extra Pole Position shroud laying around that had some minor cig burns on it. The one on my system is in far worse condition, so I decided I'd try to sand the extra one down to see how it would turn out. Actually turned out very nice. But, now it needs paint. What kind of paint and what paint method would you use on the plastic shroud?

For the size of the shroud, spray paint would be best.

The good news is that there are a lot of advanced spray paints on the market. In particular, one meant for plastic would be best. You can find some at your local big box hardware store, but I strongly recommend finding a good speciality auto parts store (non-chain store) in your area. They should stock some great quality automotive paints for metal, plastic, vinyl, etc. Bring the shroud with you and ask their advice.

Once you get some paints, try them out on another plastic part of the inside of the shroud first to verify how they work and look when applied.

So, your saying avoid Home Depot for my paint needs. I believe there is a speciality auto store around here... i'll have to check... thanks...

Yes, avoid Home Depot.

I use SEM Promax paints for specialty game painting - mainly wood and metal. SEM has a big catalog that is pretty confusing but, eventually, you'll find the paints for plastic. Again, you local store can probably help you through the SEM catalog faster than doing it online.

I have a few of these as well. Wouldn't the texture of the plastic now be smooth from sanding? So how could one reproduce the texture of the plastic on the shroud?

Also what about holes created by the cigs, sanding might open up some spots on the shroud or at the least create low spots. How would you repair something like that?

mine wasn't as bad as yours. it had a few burns. i just sanded removed the shroud and sanded where the burns were. it is still somewhat textured and even if it wasn't would look better smooth then with burn. mine did not open any holes up...

I sanded mine down last weekend and I thought why would I paint an already black shroud black. So I didn't kinda... I made sure I used very heavy sandpaper because I didn't want it too smooth in the cig burn spots. Anyway I really got them knocked down well. Then I took clear coat paint and sprayed the whole shroud and the darn thing turned out very nice!

So no need to paint any plastic piece that is molded in color just clear coat it when your finished with all the sanding...

krylon fusion in spray can, has a fan tip that makes it go on smooth, is specialy designed to bond to plastic, spray strokes from left to right letting off the nozzle as you pass over each end, then alow a day to fully cure and it will be nice,

FWIW, I've used Krylon Fusion in the past... and while it did bond to the plastic very well, the nozzle on EVERY can I've ever used clogged about 5 mins into the projects and spattered globs of paint onto the surface of what I was painting. That was about 4 years or so ago (IIRC) and was constant across the 5 different cans I used. ... just a friendly warning. Maybe they fixed that, maybe I had a bad batch... no idea, but I've avoided the stuff like the plague ever since.

I used the krylon fusion spary can on a plastic monitor bezel the other day with no problems. it sprays really easy. is there any pics of the finished shroud? i'd found a NOS for mine, so the old shroud is sitting around and i'd like to sand out the cig burns and repaint it if it would look nice.

I have always used SEM products when painting plastic and they work very well. I believe I even have a texture paint made by SEM but I think that was to match the look of vinyl.
