Ive got an altered beast conversion in a dragon's lair cab and i am converting it
back to dl and i was wondering if i painted the sides with fresh paint(the vinyl has
some faded splotches) if it would hide the textured vinyl look. I want to keep the old
dl vinyl texture but wasnt sure what to do. thx for any suggestions.

In this case, you should really consider just ponying up the cash for the replacement vinyl at arcadeshop. It is a DEAD match. I had them send me a sample and compared to my original cab. Costly, but worth it, especially if you are going to go and add side art.

If this was some kind of a cruddy game I'd say go cheap, but this is DL we are talking about here.

Now if you are trying to do this to retain your side art, and the vinyl doesn't have any rips in it...I guess I would recommend using something like an airbrush to do this...so you can get light coats.

+1, new vinyl all the way. You're after bison black, black hide or black morocco. All are good matches for the different vinyls used in DL cabs.

There's no harm trying to airbrush on some satin paint first before stripping the cab to see how it looks. But you can't beat that new vinyl look.

The results would be terrible. Doing it the right way will be tedious, but will pay off. Get the old stuff off, sand the sides, repair any minor chips with Bondo/filler. Sand it slick, primer or use a poly/clear, finish sand it slick, wipe with Naptha, apply vinyl. Harder than it sounds!

If you're going through that pain, painting would be a sin. It's full cab vinyl, so that's about as easy as it gets. The only reason I've ever painted over anything was that weird melamine stuff on Midway cabs...that doesn't come off well. If it's pure vinyl, you won't be satisfied with anything other than replacing it.

Yeah I think that painting it might be a marginally better than faded vinyl, but nowhere near as nice as new vinyl.

Spend the money on the vinyl instead of the paint.
