Hey all - I'm getting ready to paint my Galaxian (was coated in black over the original vinyl, all the old artwork is too far gone). I want to put a finish on it that mimics the original vinyl siding. Any tips on what to use to get it to have that small textured feel?

Also what finish would you recommend to get a similar shine to the original? I'm thinking eggshell should be pretty close.

Welcome to KLOV!

Any satin finish paint will mimic standard vinyl pretty well in touch and look so long your survace is smooth. What texture does the Galaxian have? Pics? I have a Galaga that is looking rough on the edges and looks to have a thin vinyl like surface, definetly not standard paint if it is. I think I will harden the loose fibers that have been dinged, fill them and shoot the cab with a satin paint, that should look pretty good.

well if you want a textured feel to it i would prep the cab.
then paint 1 coat with foam roller
then next coat used rustoloum textured on it (comes in a spray can)
then paint another coat with foam roller

i would use oil based paint but thats me, or use eggshell for latex.

but try feeling the spray cans to see if thats the texture you want or poss use hammered .

I went and checked out the textured selection at Wal-mart. The Rustoleum "hammered" finish seems most like what I'm after. They didn't have it in white, but I bet a hardware or paint store would carry it.

Then again someone pointed out this at arcadecontrols: http://www.thisoldgame.com/products/matt-white-vinyl
So now I've got to decide if buckets of primer and spray paint is going to cost the same as just using real vinyl, or whether the extra expense is worth the real deal finish.

I looked at that link, so basically its 2.50/ft for 12"x36"? Lookin at about $30, which isn't bad. Anyone have a writeup as to application of this stuff?

I bought vinyl from TOG and applied it. It's a decent deal for vinyl that's been carefully selected to be good for game use etc. As far as applying it, see this post I did after I applied mine:

I would honestly recommend just putting the vinyl back on. Paint is messy, very time consuming, and a PITA. Vinyl is too, but if you prep well with sanding and filling in holes, then wipe the surface with tach cloth, you will have perfect vinyl. Otherwise if you want to mimic vinyl, just paint with satin finish paint.

I have used the black vinyl from TOG and you have to be ultra picky when sanding. It will show every little bump and speck of dust. I never would have believed it, but as the old joke goes about fat women in spandex biking shorts, you can not only tell it's a quarter, you can which mint stamped it out..

It's a joke, but it's actually true. I seriously believe if you put that vinyl on a quarter, you could see the imprint of the mint. Maybe not the letter, but it will be a bump.

I recently put the same stuff on my burgertime (used to make the kickpanel art) and it was a breeze to install. Just knew that I needed to sand and fill every single void, then tach cloth is clean. No little bumps, looks amazing.

Why would you want to use vinyl if you are planning to paint anyways? No cab came stenciled over vinyl. Prep, paint and stencil.

So I was at my storage unit today looking at my sad Galaxian cab waiting for a direction, and noticed an edge on the vinyl was loose (it was 100+ degrees here today). A few minutes later I had a good 20% of the vinyl peeled off in one piece! Man I hope the rest of it comes off like that! The wood underneath looks VERY nice, almost like melamine, I guess due to the adhesive.

Yeah..you're probably seeing a layer of dried adhesive. Rich @ thisoldgame posted about finding a good match for the Galaxian art textured vinyl, but not sure if it will ever get made. I'd probably stick it between 2 other games for now, until sideart gets made. Try and find one of the marquee reproductions, made years ago. Surely someone is still selling some. They are worth whatever they cost. That's one of the coolest marquees every

Its an empty cab that'll probably become a multi-jamma and/or Capcom Bowling. The thing looks like someone took two swings with a hammer to it before I got it. The entire right monitor shelf/bracket thing was completely busted off and in pieces. Since then the back lower panel was re-glued and clamped to keep it together, and the monitor bracket was re-assembled (out of the pieces) and glued and stapled back in. At this point its just sitting there waiting for the next step. I'm not much of a restoration type but if I can get my dad to actually use some of the 85,000 woodworking tools we have maybe we can finish putting it back together.

He's trying to reproduce the unique vinyl texture that Galaxian had, so I can understand why he is doing this.

Exactly. Galaxian had silk-screened art that I'm wanting to put back over some fresh vinyl. The art is insanely complicated for stencils but I have more time than money these days and don't mind spending an hour hunched over 8.5x11" printouts with a hobby knife.

Vinyl dye seems like it might be the answer! http://case-mods.linear1.org/im-high-on-vinyl-dye/

I would just paint it white for now and put it between a couple games. The white that thisoldgame.com currently has does not look like original at all. The original is almost a wood grain texture. I also heard that Rich found something close, but it was cost prohibitive if I recall correctly. At one point Rich sold the silkscreened kickplate art on the plain white vinyl. I believe he was considering another run.
