Hi all,
I'm just about finished with my first ever pinball restoration. It's a Sega Twister pin, and was in pretty decent shape overall.

Before I button everything up I'd like to paint the black side rails of inside of the cabinet. Basically the black sides that are on either side of the playfield.

Any recommendations as to what I should use for paint? I'd prefer to use latex for ease of cleanup, but am open to other suggestions if that's a bad idea. What about the finish? It looks slightly more shiny than matte, but I'm not sure if I'd go so far as to call it eggshell/satin.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Use high gloss black. Not semigloss.

DE and Sega used gloss. It doesn't look like high gloss, but as soon as you put semi-gloss up against it you will see a huge difference.

Shardian- thanks for the reply, and sorry for the delay in responding.

Are you sure about the high gloss paint? The factory paint seems to be quite a bit more matte than high gloss... seems closer to either a satin or semi gloss. I'm attaching a photo of side of the pin. It's pretty tough to see the finish since I'm trying to photo black, but maybe the photo will help.

Also, I'd prefer to use latex paint for the easier application and cleanup. It seems like it should hold up fine since the sides are totally protected, but I figured I'd ask if you or anyone else thought the latex paint is a mistake.

Latex paint doesn't belong on ANY arcade game period. You can go two ways: Paint with a gloss or semi-gloss paint. Either one will require that you remove the playfield... that is if you do it properly (IMHO). Otherwise you have to mask off the playfield very well.

If you go with gloss I would use Rustoleum lacquer. Semi gloss I would use Rustoleum Painter's Touch Semi Gloss or Krylon Semi Flat.

Thanks again for the input. From looking at the pin I'm pretty sure I can detatch the playfield from the cabinet without having to disconnect everything. Then, I'll just hang the playfield from the rafters (unfinished on the work side of the basement) and carefully paint the inside sides of the cabinet. Call me crazy, but seems like it should work.

I'm also going to top whining, put on my big boy pants and paint with oil-based paints. I'm planning on semigloss paint, and will take the recommendations of Rustoleum Painter's Touch Semi Gloss or Krylon Semi Flat. Do any of the major chains carry either of these paints?

I second Rustoleum semigloss or satin, either one will look very good and hold up well. Should be available just about anywhere that sells spraypaint. Just mask the areas well and I think your hanging playfield idea will probably work fine, but be damned sure it's secure. :)

Has the game been cleaned before? If not now would be a great time to "Shop" the playfield. Remove as many parts as you feel comfortable to make it as light as possible. I think your idea would work fine but like Wadelanham said make sure its secure :)

BTW here is what Rustoleum Lacquer looks like:

Yup, I actually recently finished shopping the pin. I've replaced all the rubbers, replaced all the lights, removed most of the pieces to clean and polish the playfield and put it all back together. Now it all looks so nice that I decided to finish it off by painting the sides.

Stupid quiestion, but are these recommended paints spraypaints or brush/roll on?

They are spray paints.

I finallly got around to painting the sides of this pin last week. I used Rustoleum Painter's Touch in gloss black. It turned out pretty nice.

BTW, I used my trick of unhooking the playfield and hanging it on a strap that I wrapped around a support beam in my basement. It worked like a champ, and saved me from having to unhook like 30 connections from the pin.

Attached are a couple of photos.

I'm trying to remember who told me this, might be an old operator I bought a game off but he said there was a black spray product that was specifically for video games/pinball machines. It even had a name that told you it was made just for this use.

I'll ask him about it the next time we speak.
