Paint brand and color for Nintendo coin mech face??

I saw a resto thread here a few months back where someone painted nintendo coin mech faceplates in a color that matched close to exact. What I need to know is what color and brand the paint was if that person see's this. If anyone else has done this in the past please chime in also with what you used. Thanks!!

I don't think the original finish is paint. I don't remember seeing anyone posting a paint match for the finish. I think most people were just doing the matching themselves.

You can still get brand new Asahi-Seiko faceplates, which havn't changed at all from the originals. I think you need a $50 order though to get parts directly from them.

What is the original plating? Chrome? There are 'chrome' spray paints, but to me, they never look quite like chrome. Might try Michaels type craft store..usually have a wide assortment of metallic finishes in a rattle can

Not chrome. The original plates are a sort of brushed silver finish. If you don't want to order originals from Asahi Seiko (the faceplates are cheap, but you have to do a minimum $50 order to setup an account), I would say go with Rustoleum Matte Silver/Gray enamel spray paint.

Here's an old thread where I talk about ordering direct from the source:

I painted up a few of them a few months back and they are more of a matte gray metallic. Not quite as dark as a pewter, not quite bright enough to be silver, and certainly not metallic enough to be chrome. I'll check what I used and post a close up when I get home if I remember. This is the best I can do for now:

The DK3 has the painted face plates, the Popeye has unmolested face plates and the playchoice actually has originals that are shinier than any other Asahi Seiko face plates I've yet seen.

Phetishboy what red paint did you use on that dk3 cabinet? I have an old popeye cabinet I'm going to convert back to donkey kong and want the Radar Scope red version.

I used This Old Game's vinyl kit. It's a pretty good match. I used Rustoleum Sunrise Red as a basecoat before installing the vinyl. As to the face plates, I think I just used Rustoleum metallic silver, though the original finish is actually more like brushed aluminum. I'll post some close-up comparison pics later today.

I've always been curious about this. You and Gregatron have both done stellar work with TOG vinyl kits.

I know it's hard to tell sometimes with pictures, but does it have the same look and feel of the original even though it's vinyl? Is it a huge pain to apply? How did you apply to the front panels? I know Greg disassembled and reassembled his cabs (insane). I already have enough trouble with side art.

I may consider doing this in the future for MB if I decide to keep it in the long run. It seems it would be worth a try based on how it turned out for you guys.

*Sorry to go on a tangent. I hope you're able to resolve your coin faceplates based on what's been discussed. Go with original plates, if not, Rustoleum matte silver spray paint.

hey man i can make these sweet if you wanna bring them up to berkeley, or mail them. I manage my fathers autobody shop and use the best paint out there. Not some cheap crap out of a can thats gonna flake off. Basecoat clear coat, and we have thousands of chips to use to make a perfect match. And can mix any color, solid or metallic.........just lemme kno

Is that offer open to all KLOVers? :D

Yeah it was matte silver I used. I usually just polish them and leave them alone, but I thought I'd give painting them a try. The matte silver is not a perfect match to the original finish, but close enough for me. I also sprayed the mechs with an oil-based clear coat. The original finish is on the left:

Thanks Phet!!! I thought it may have been you that had done this before. I didn't want to go through the trouble of sending the mechs out for paint or ordering new faces since I don't need new ones. It's just that mine have a permanent staining to them that will not come out even through sanding them so I'd rather spend $4 and paint them instead. Also time is a factor for me and when I am doing a resto I do not like to be kept waiting,I want it done now.

No problem. I also have stainless steel appliance epoxy here that I was gonna try, but that seems to leave a weird residue like little metal shavings on the surface you paint. Me no like. Matte Silver or Satin silver (2 coats) with a clear coat (3 coats) should protect the surface enough to not get scratched by quarters again.

Old thread, I know.

How did painting the coin mechs compare to polishing them?

But I am about top pick up either Matte Silver or Satin silver, and was wondering what brand you used, as well as what clear coat did you use on the coin mechs.

I'm about to paint everything I can paint on a Donkey Kong before decided if I should follow through with powder coating ,and I want to make sure I have everything need.

I have the cans in the below pics. (Is there anything pictured I shouldn't use or I missed)? :D

Thanks.

Satin silver and Rustoleum satin clear. I think they turned out nice.
