Pacman monitor, no red

Im to the point where I'm considering sending the board off just so I dont make any irreversable mistakes...I bought an assortment of resistors that had the correct ohm ratings, but upon getting them home, I see that they have five stripes instead of the four on the board...

This page describes the difference between 4 and 5 band resistors. You can swap them as long as they are the same rating.

Looks like I've found the problem, all that switching must have burnt out these resistors. Looks like a radio shack trip is in my future. These things hard to solder? I have past experience soldering guitar electronics, but this is a wee bit different, but Im willing to try...

Those resistors are at the output of the "Red" signal which goes to your monitor, which may explain your red problems. I'm not sure what would make them blow like that though.

These big old through-hole components are a piece of cake to solder. Just heat up one leg on the underside until the solder melts and pull that leg out of the hole from the top side, then repeat for the other leg to remove the resistor completely. You should have no trouble, especially if you have previous experience.

If the red output were plugged in somewhere where it wasn't supposed to be it might have toasted them.

But sofar it looks like the monitor red is turned up way to much, and the blown resistors on the board are for red.. Now you know what that problem is.

sounds like the rest is just the edge connector. take your time, and don't get in a hurry. Replace the resistors, and check the edge connector on the board. You might try just using a pencil eraser, and then a little rubbing alcohol. As long as it's clean that should be good. Try that and let us know how it goes. Then we can start working forward from there.

Okay...so the red screen has possibly been solved, when wiggling one of the wires on the monitor board, it goes from black to red, so its most likely just a loose connection. I soldered the new resistors in, and Im getting nothing still. Those were the only three visibly damaged parts of the board. The heat sink gets hot, so I know the board is getting power, but Im not sure why nothing else is working...

Can you connect the control panel and speaker to see if the game plays blind? (i.e. is the entire board is not working, or just the video output?)
