Sounds like you are having degaussing issues. Usually it looks good when open, then as you close it, the colors change, or perhaps just one side of the monitor does.
Once you close the lid, you need to manually degauss the monitor. Sometimes you'll get interference from the transformer in the bottom and won't be able to degauss it back to normal. If that happens, then come back and we can help you make a shield to keep that from happening...

ok ill bite...how do you manually degauss the monitor.?? I only got shocked 5 times putting the suckin cup looking thing witht he two metal ends back in too get it to work at all....so this is all new and foreign to me...ive learned the screwdriver triick to not get shocked but dont know from degauss?
It works like a charm. If you don't have (or can't get) one, you can check to see if any local members have one they can bring over to help you.
Otherwise, a decent magnet can sometimes help. I've sometimes been able to get decent results with a strong magnet (from the refrigerator or a magnetic screwdriver held close to the screen). Others have reported using a corder drill or electric fan and holding the motor close to the screen while running the drill/fan. Start in the center and make circles larger and larger as you move out past the edges of the tube. You may have to do this a few times, as this method isn't as reliable as using a proper deguassing coil...
