Hi. I'm hoping my pacman can be brought back to life! I played a game and left it on for about 30 min. Screen was black. Turned it off and when I turned it back on it shows like the video. Won't play and there's a fast soft clicking sound coming from the speaker.

Thanks for the help!

reseat all socketed chips first. if it works again, you're done. if it doesn't still, you will now need to pull the chips (work them out one side at a time as evenly as possible), if the legs of the chips look anything but shiny silver, you'll need to probably clean them up with fine sandpaper. you have to do this without breaking any of the legs off though. :)

this looks like a Z80 CPU thing though, I would start there first.

I would encourage testing voltage at one of the smaller ICs. (if you don't know how I have a picture that shows where to test in the PSU guide in my signature) if your +5 is morbidly low, then you'll probably need to focus on the fuse holders. the originals are made of galvanized steel and are 100 years old now, they're probably rusted or oxidized to oblivion.

also check that the edge connector isn't torched. the fuse issue will cause the edge to burn up. if you still have a filter board between the harness, remove it.

i have the best cleaner you will find out there and fits those .6 row spacing eproms perfectly to clean the inside and outside of the chip legs and its amazing on pcb edge connectors and i have used one for years so they last years and years and i have 170 games so mine gets used more then most. everyone that has bought them LOVE them.

sweet. I thought something like that existed, haven't seen one in many years though. I might have to get one. how does it do the outside though?

replace the fuse holder(s) there in the bottom of the cabinet
they are notorious for not allowing enough electron flow because of failure to grip tight enough

while its on and not working, try to very gently lift the wire harness near where the wire harness goes into the plastic connector that connects to the game board
all that weight can torque the connector over the years and cause fault with the pins inside the connector connecting to the finger edge
*WARNING*
have to be very careful in playing with the connector for obvious reasons but you have to determine where the fault lies in order to progress with your diagnosis.
very carefully like, move the wire harness just slightly and usually a fault can be quickly detected. a good connection can handle a slight movement
many pacman wire harnesses can use a little help/reworking of the wire harness to cabinet mount there

good luck
