Packing/Crating a machine for international shipment

Hello KLOV Forum!

I figured I would share my experience here with the group for informational purposes.

Recently I purchased a "full" sized machine that resided in Sweden. To get it to the US, it was strapped to a palette and then a crate was built around the game for safe transport. The game went from Sweden to Southern California. I received three quotes as follows:

Fedex Air Freight: $4500
UPS Air Freight: $850
Viking Transport by Sea (for the Nordic area): ~$1000

Obviously I went with UPS and overall it was an ok experience. The price seemed VERY low, but it did arrive in just a few days. It got hung up in customs only due to UPS administrative error, but nevertheless it arrived safely.

Now I am sending another game BACK to Sweden using the same crate and palette, but since it is a smaller table top machine (Playchoice 10 Countertop), the box is smaller. The buyer plans to use Viking Transport by Sea which leaves from the east coast so I will be sending this game across the country via ground. Surprisingly...and this is not a typo, here are the quotes I received so far to go from So Cal to Virginia

UPS Ground Freight: $1500
Beltmann: $450
Beltmann Outsourced Option: $350

It is quite a lot of work to build the crate, I am fortunate that the shipper in Sweden took care of the build, so my reassembling was quite easy. Most likely Beltmann's alternative option will be the selected choice to get it to Virginia whereby the buyer will be taking over from there.

Just figured I would share my story with the group :)

Red Tent shipping question

Hello Orlandu81,

I found your post helpful. Thanks. But I am hoping you might be able to help me a little more. I read in another post that you have restored three Red Tents. I have found one in Canada, Edmonton and am trying to find shipping that is good but not extremely expensive from there to Houston, Texas.

Can you suggest anything that would help me out. The big problem is that I reside in Australia and I am buying a red tent as a surprise for my hunny in Texas. The currency exchange rate is horrendous at the moment.

I noticed you mentioned Beltmann and Beltmann Outsourced. You wouldn't by chance remember the weight and dimensions of the unit would you? That would help out a lot. Plus if you have any other valuable suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanking in advance. Hoping you can save my life lol.

Have a great day.

Beltmann only outsourced the smaller crate because of the dimensions. Red Tents although not tall, are very wide and take up tons of space.

A red tent is a risky item to ship, as the odd shape and top heavy frame make it a prime candidate to be damaged. I wouldn't go "cheap", and going from Canada to the US you will have to deal with customs which I am not sure Beltmann will do for you.

I would honestly recommend driving it into the US and then having it shipped to Texas, or to keep your eyes open for one that already resides in the US.
