Starting a pac restore and below the tinted plexi, there is a black plastic monitor surround. But right now its free floating and there doesn't seem anywhere to attach it to. Were these just placed on the monitor and then sandwiched down by the plexi and glass or screwed in somehow?

if its like the Ms Pac, then there are 4 plastic holders that hold it in place.

Are there 4 screws that hold the black surround to the monitor frame? On my Ms pac (and Tron and SH), there are plastic clips that the screw goes into, then through the surround, into the frame. Does that make sense?

I can take a picture, if you like...

They were attached by two screws on the bottom near the cp. There is a wood strip there. They rested ontop of the monitor. The smoke plexi was double stuck to the bezel.

Ms pac was totally different.

If you could take a pic that would be great.. there are no clips.. but right above the control panel there are 2 screws in the wood that look like they would be in the correct place for something..

The pac I'm working on now doesn't have the bezel so I'm showing a ms pac bezel. But basically the bezel rest ontop of the wood slat with the screw. So the bezel overlaps the wood slat to the bottom edge or flush iirc. Then the screw is just screwed through the bezel on either side.

If you are using a new bezel, just put the monitor in, position the bezel, and screw it in place. It will rest on the monitor.

the ms. pac bezel is different from whats included in a regular pac...my pac-man is also free floating ("cuz I'm freeeeee, freeee floating")

Originally there was a bracket on each side of the monitor tube, attached to the monitor frame at the same bolts that hold the tube to the frame. The bezel and tinted plexi were then screwed down onto the two brackets via 4 screws and 4 plastic clips.

Frequently when monitors were swapped out of these machines, the brackets were not transferred over from one monitor frame to another, leaving the original attachment points for the bezel missing. I've seen these bezels stuck on with tape, screwed to the closest hunk of wood, left floating around or flat out missing.

Wish I had one handy to show you a pic, no pacs in the shop right now.. :(

You are thinking Ms Pac. None of the Pac mans I've worked on had brackets.

Pacs had the plastic bezel either screwed or stapled to the wood brace by the control panel. Two screws, thats it. The tinted plexi was double sidded taped to the plastic bezel.
The mspac setup can be bolted in place and is a much better arrangment. I call it the mspac setup but it was actually used on just about all the midway games at that time so they are not too hard to find one.

The wood piece with the screws sits about an inch lower than the lip of the plastic surround..

Sounds like you have a Pac-Man with a Ms.Pac-Man surround. Pac-Man and Galaxian used a bigger surround. As stated, they were attached to the wood framing by the control panel, and the tinted plexi was taped to it. On later machines Midway went to the metal bracket and plastic clips setup.

The wood with the screws is pretty well flush with the monitor face so I don't see how a surround would even work really. When the bezel is put over the plexi and surround, its 'really' tight. I will be gutting the cab for paint so will take a pic.

I just had the same problem with my new battlezone. Shroud was inside the cab, and I couldn't figure out how the thing fit. Until I saw the correct one. DOH
