I recently picked up a Pac-Man and when I turned it on I noticed a buzzing noise in the cabinet. When I look in the cabinet I can see the flyback arcing behind the rubber boot on the tube. I'm going to re-cap it. But is there anything else I should be worried about?

#1 "DISCHARGE" the crt.

#2 Remove the anode cup from the crt and clean both the tube and the cup (rubber boot) good.
A good wipedown with Windex or something is fine, just don't splooge it down into the hole.

Technically, the "flyback" isn't arcing. It is producing HV at the anode cup as it should. The arcing you see is due to an improper fit to the tube - maybe from dirt or possibly a torn cup. Sometimes the clips separate some from the wire and you get an arc to them.

If the actual flyback was arcing - i.e. lightning shooting out the side to the frame - then you'd have to replace it...

And sometimes it'll arc if you don't have the DAG ground connected.

Discharged CRT removed anode and cleaned monitor. I re-spread pins at end of flyback wire and reinstalled. Arching is gone. Nothing beats a clean and tight anode hole. :-D
