(attention: newbie post)
I decided to get the Pac-man PLUS that I purchased 10 years ago, BACK to the Original Pac-man (original Pac-man cocktail cabinet).

I found several chips laying in the bottom of the cocktail table. They're labeled (see pic): PM A, PM B, PM C, PM D and they're MCM2532L chips. I was (am?) hopeful that these are the original chips necessary to convert the system back.

I was able to pull the ribbon cable, and re-seat the original Z80 chip (also found in cabinet). I replaced the Pac-Man PLUS chips from sockets 6E, 6F, 6H and 6J with the "found" chips, placing PM A --> 6E, PM B -- 6F (and so on..) and got a very garbled display upon boot up.

I didn't pull the chips on the board in 5E & 5F, as a hand-written label says: PMan 5E on one and PMan 5F on the other. From what I gather those also should be replaced to get back to the original Pac-man too, but at this point I'm at a lose...

Based on the chips I've found (again, see pic), and the actual GOAL of getting back to the original Pac-man, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? or need to buy? or burn?

TIA - Tim

I'd try putting them in the other order. a-6j, b-6h, etc.

Those aren't factory labels, so two questions come to mind

1. why did somebody put labels on them

2. why were they messing with the eproms anyways

They may not even have the right code on them anymore.

Looking at the pictures, the two black proms are the two original character roms at 5e and 5f, might try swapping those back in... usually though if you have those two wrong, it'll still play and just have the wrong images.

Crap! Fried for sure, hey? Perhaps that was my original problem! ... is it worth re-trying, putting them in the right order this time? If I do in fact need a new 6F, and we don't know what the other chips were anyways, is there a good place to go for these chips?

I didn't do anything with 5E & 5F at all, so it doesn't sound like I should (yet).

Also, looking at the original Pac-man PLUS instructions, it mentions pulling out 4A & 7F. Do I need to do anything with those?

P.S. thanks for the quick reply!

That itty bitty chip is a color prom. Without swapping it, some of the colors will be off. If I recall, it will still be quite playable.

It sucks that somebody stuck that label on the chip upside down. Without paying close attention, many people would have plugged it in the same way.
It's the orientation of the chip that matters, not the label. (one side of the chip has a small notch. The sockets usually have the same notch to indicate correct placement).

Easy fix though.

Try the rom in the correct way, they dont always fry right away. You need to change out all 6 roms and both color proms to go back to pacman.
Those are original roms/labels, they are off an early board. I have seen many like it. "A" would be 6E, "B" is 6F and so forth.

Just put the PM A, PM B, PM C & PM D chips back into the PCB along with Z80, and it just makes a bunch of scary sounds through the speaker, and no particular pattern on the monitor. Put the Pac-man PLUS stuff back in place after that failed, (and played another quick game) so I still know I haven't broken anything else (yet)?

So if those are original chips, then it sounds like I just need to find a 6F chip (which I seated backwards on my initial run at this), and I should be good to go?

Thanks again guys for all of your prompt responses & help!

So you need at least a 6F rom and you also need 4A and 7F color proms.
Did you change 5E and 5F back to paman? If not you need those too.

Ok, so I think you guys have got me on the right track - I just purchased the following parts:

* Pacman / Mspac 6 Rom Set
* Pac / MsPac 4A Color Prom
* Pac / MsPac 7F Color Prom

... from http://www.twistywristarcade.com Not only did I get excellent support from everyone here today, including Riptor, but that site has excellent prices (I did take a few minutes to shop around).

I'll post a follow-up (hopefully it is just a 'Thank You') once I get the parts (and not MORE questions) and get them installed (the proper direction this time as well!).

Hey Guys!
I wanted to close out this thread and let everyone know my conversion back to the ORIGINAL Pac-man from the (upgraded?) Pac-man PLUS was successful! Thanks to everyone for the help getting through this! Also, the chips Riptor sent me arrived very quickly! I was very impressed with how knowledgeable and helpful everyone on here has been! Thank you SOO much!
