i'm about to finish my pac-man restoration, but i'm still missing those light bulbs. my pac has a light fixture which allows two bulbs to be screwed in on the left and on the right. i was wondering which bulbs were used originally and i found two different versions:

picture 1 shows a bulb roughly 5.3 inch (=13.5 cm) long with 25W 120V

picture 2 shows a bulb with 40W 120V (i have no idea how long that b**** is)

if version 2 wouldn't be too long, it might be possible to get two of those into the light fixtures which would provide an even illumination of the marquee, but i have NO IDEA where to get a bulb like that ...

would be great to hear which bulbs you guys have installed in your pac!

The ones I have look like oven bulbs.

Do yourself a favor and just put in a couple 8-11 watt U-Tube style compact FL bulbs. IKEA and a few other places sell them quite cheap.

They will save the marquee from yellowing and other possible damage and give a much better white light with 1/4th the power used and heat generated.

I've messed with dozens of pacs over the years and the ones that still had the original bulbs in them always had pic1 in them. Kind of sad that when you open up a marquee, it's still got the bulbs in it that burned out in 1982.

Ditto. Though a standard 60w equivelant CFL is all you really need. They will light it up better and eliminate heat, and alot more efficient, and will last 10x longer than incandescent, you cant lose.

I use the cfls in my pac and galaxian to save the marquee from heat.

Ully....you don't want the exact replacements, they burn too hot and they yellow the marquee.....just put some "Daylight" spiral bulbs. And yes, they make the marquee light up perfectly even.

Here's what they look like, and they made the marquee look exactly as original with no heat involved:

thx for your replies, guys! guess i won't go original then. i'll have to pay ikea a visit on monday. don't know what happens when i put 240v german bulbs into 120v american sockets though - will they simply shine not as brightly?

Oh hell, I didnt realize you were in Germany. Is this a North American machine? If so I bet someone in the states will be happy to ship a couple bulbs your way. I'd do it but I fear customs might destroy them before they reach your doorstep.

can you get an even illumination all over the marquee with those two?

Definitely not, but it just depends on what you're going for. I believe original Pac cabs lit the "Pac" and the "Man" separately, so you could see the separate light sources behind each side of the marquee. An even, white, flourescent light would probably look great, but is not the original look.

That said, my Pac is a 60-1, so I've strayed far off 100% authenticity. I'll probably swap to flourescents at some point too. The heat factor people point out here is a great point.

I have a couple of normal white 25W bulbs in mine which I got from True Value 5 or 6 years ago. I'm just waiting for them to fail someday.

The voltage is tapped straight from the input voltage.....so, if you're sending 240V into the game.....the marquee bulbs are receiving the same juice. Do not use 120V USA bulbs....you'll have some serious heat, before they pop.

I'm using straight CFLs that I picked up at the local dollar store. Something like this:

Since they're longer than a spiral CFL, they light up the marquee a little more evenly (more like the original bulbs) and, well, the price is right!
