Pac Man Carpeting

Wow. I wasn't expecting such a quick response and from so many people!!

Just to clarify some things...

I'm looking for $250 per rug or "game board", plus whatever shipping is. I am going to list them for $300 on craisglist/eBay/etc. I'm really not sure if that is the going rate or not, as I haven't found any in "new" condition that were sold, only used "fair" condition in a similar price range. If I find that the price is too high, I'll lower it and post here first so you guys have first dibs.

I have a total of 6 that I would like to sell right now, and 6 more that I am going to hold onto until the 50 year anniversary. I'll also keep an update of how many I have available here.

If you have any questions, would like to see more pictures, etc., I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks,

Doug

Edit: I have stitched a binding onto the edge of 3 rugs already (as seen in the original photo I posted). I can supply with or without that edging, same price.

Out of curiosity, where have you found these for similar pricing?

The going rate for carpet is something like $2-$4 per square foot, but it can run as high as $10. You know that because you work in a retail flooring store. I'm curious to know what the Pac-Man carpet sold it for BITD because I'm sure it wasn't $120 per square foot. :)

EDIT: Meant to say $20 per square foot.

A great find for sure. If you look at the first comment on the video you'll see that someone had been searching for a long time for the rug and ended paying $100 for a used one on Craigslist. He also mentioned that he would have been willing to spend up to $450 for one.

I seem to have upset some people with my price. I said in my previous post that I'm not sure on the price and I'll adjust it if I find that it is too high. I view this rug as a collectible, and a rare one at that. If you just want a Pac-Man rug, there are plenty for sale on eBay for less. My rugs were licensed by Bally Midway in the early 1980s. They are in excellent condition and from what I have found, there are very few, if any, left for sale that are in this condition. I feel the price of $250 is fair and I will remain firm on that until I find otherwise.

To be clear, I haven't found any that are actively for sale in this price range. Only ones that have been sold. I contacted sellers or buyers to find out the sell price if it was not posted. In all cases, the rug sold was used and not in good condition.

Wow, you're going to hold onto these for another 15 years?

Oh, and I'm out - I had no idea these were going for that much.

Well, sort of. I'm only interested in selling the first 6 at the $250 price point. For the rest I'll stow away and maybe leave a listing at $500. I don't expect them to fly off the shelf at that point but if they don't sell I'm okay with hanging onto them until they do.

You should check your math. If I were selling the rugs at $125 per s.f. I'd be asking for $1500 per rug.

If this carpet were produced today, it would retail for about $100. That would be if a manufacturer decided to invest in designing, licensing, and mass producing this again. Then the retailer would have to decide that taking on a roll of Pac-Man carpet to be cut and sold as $100 area rugs is a good business decision. That will not happen. To have a custom carpet like this made would cost double and take 6-12 months to produce from start to finish.

I know carpet and the market for it. What I don't know is vintage rugs and collectibles. All I know is that the price is determined by what a buyer is willing to pay. I think I have set a fair price. If I find otherwise, I'll lower the price.

Seriously you KLOV price police are just irritating.

This is not a brand new rug. This is vintage and collectable. It's worth what people are willing to pay for it. Don't like it, move on. If they don't sell the price will go down.

This isn't the for sale section, so I don't see an issue with people commenting on price here. The guy has a roll of the carpet that is 12' wide by as many as 100' long if it is complete and new. Three panels across and maybe as many as 33 panels long. Could be 100 boards ($250 each) that could be made = $25,000 roll of carpet?

I'm curious to see if people will pay it. Maybe they will. Who knows?

My mistake. Meant to say $20 per square foot, which is still $10 more than the high end of carpeting. And you're right, the carpet is collectible. Nobody is saying it isn't. But you're still asking $250 for a piece of carpet the size of a beach towel. I'm sure you'll have no problem selling it to collectors, either here or on Ebay.

Shame I can't afford that... it would match the Pac-Man bedding set I have. (Can't use it... it was for a Single bed. I've had it since the 80s, and it's still in really good shape.)
