A long-time friend of the museum stopped by today with an unusual donation: A piece of Pac Man carpeting. This appears to be wall to wall carpeting and not just an area rug.

He said back in the 1980's his father got this piece right before the demolition crew tossed it into a dumpster at an arcade that closed in Southern New Hampshire. Have any KLOVers seen this particular Pac Man carpet before?

Thanks,
Gary

that is really sweet you need to cut a nice segment and frame it then pass another piece on to someone else ;)

If you look closely at it, there are no 100% complete images on the carpet. The left ones are cut-off more severly than the right ones but I should be able to piece together one or two complete pieces for display.

It is an amazing find. I never saw anything like it back in the day. I wonder if it was commercially available or a one-off custom job?

based on the lined off sections and the text I would guess this was an uncut sheet that was meant to be cut into separate rugs like the one in the auction. Very possible an arcade bought the sheet specifically to use as carpet for their establishment but, I doubt it was normally sold as carpet.

The auction says it was cut from a larger piece and the edges bound.
A number of years ago, I acquired a remnant piece of Pac Man Carpet. I do not believe that it was ever used in a home. It had some damage, so I decided to section the carpet into as many 3x4 sections as was possible. I had the edges professionally bound with light blue binding. The carpets came out looking great.

It looks like the area rug in this auction. I have one hanging in my gameroom.

I've heard it's part of a PacMan board game. Maybe you have left overs from the manufacturing plant.

Text from the auction description:

Adds some mystery to the topic. Was it sold as carpeting or not? Hmmm....

I have a rug like the one pictured in the auction. I have seen one auction before that included the rug with some foam play pieces. I believe they were trying to market it as some sort of board game.

Hard to be sure but the fact that the design is sectioned off by the black lines, ist has text that seems to have copyright info ect. and the way the image in each square is identical yet stops at the black line without completing the image seems to be an odd design for carpet that was meant to cover a large area.

I work in a retail flooring store and stumbled across a roll of this Pac-Man carpet while I was cleaning out the warehouse. The carpet comes in a 12' wide roll, with 3 "boards" fitting across that span. Each board is 3' wide by 4' long. The carpet seems to be an olefin and it is set into a foam backing.

I found this forum while I was searching for more information so I can price and sell these. If anyone is interested, I have 6 boards in "new" condition that I would like to sell. The boards have been cut from the roll and the edges are bound. I attached some photos to show the roll and finished product.
